Hi!
I am wondering if anyone knows of an organization that will donate a Kindle to a Marine deployed to Afghanistan. My husband it deployed and I would really love to get him a Kindle because he loves to read but can't tote paperback books everywhere with him there. We can't afford one so I was hoping to find an organization that would help make his deployment a little more bearable.
Thank You

Oh there IS such an organization... it was started by someone who used to be an active member here.. gosh.. lemme think and get back to you... I know they have sent out kindles in the past to people....
and while it has nothing to do with getting a Kindle, you should also check out Operation Ebook Drop, your deployed military (Marine or otherwise) can get LOTS of free reading material from a TON of independant authors.

You should post your request on the kindle discussion forum on Amazon. There are alot of veterans who read the forum and may have some ideas for you.

I'm gonna keep my mouth shut on this one...................................... I'm sorry, couldn't let this one pass.. if you are "gonna keep (your) mouth shut" why did you bother to post what comes across as a snotty reply to a brand new member? I don't think there is anything wrong with her request... and if you do, then just move on to the next thread.

Now I wish I hadn't given my old K1 to my father-in-law. If I still had an extra I would give it, I know my K1 helped me get through my deployment!

I remember reading about some libraries that were donating MP3 Players to service members that were deployed. Check with your local library. I would think an MP3 Player would be so much easier to carry than a Kindle. MP3 Players with flash drives are less breakable than Kindles.
So many free audiobooks out there from different library systems such as NetLibrary and Overdrive that can be downloaded by using a computer with Internet access.

can't help on the donation but there are ways of getting Amazon giftcards as free rewards: www.mypoints.com : I got $100 -$150 from here by hoarding the points for close to 18 months but I rarely bought anything online thru them, if you do points add up faster Harris Poll ( www.harrispoll.com Ithink) online surveys 2500 = $15 Amazon g.c. (buy in $2500 increments, the 5000 pt reward is $25, less than redeeming 2 2500 rewards World Winner ( www.worldwinner.com) play online games for a fee - get reward points. Join thru My Points and you get mypoints + WW reward points 19,000 points = $25 Amazon ( there is a lesser point one) Good Luck! Michelle

Len Edgerly from The Kindle Chronicles just did a podcast on this very same thing. He had the Army Sgt on that received a Kindle that was donated. He said that whispernet was not available in Afghanistan but would be filling his new Kindle up before departing. I believe it was M-Edge that donated the Kindle and case. The podcast was TKC 84 if anyone is interested in listening.

Army Sgt. Andre Corbin is going to help me set up a way to channel contributions to provide Kindles to troops in Afghanistan, in the area where he will deploy in March. I'm calling it Kindles for Kandahar, which is the name of the province near where he will be stationed. I'll have something added to my Reading Edge Facebook page soon. I'm also going to see if Amazon might have a program for providing Kindles at a reduced price for the project. Andre was truly inspiring in the interview, so I'm motivated to work to make this happen. Here is link to the Kindle Chronicles episode w/ Andre's interview: http://www.thekindlechronicles.com/2010/02/26/tkc-84-scott-stossel/ .

One more thing: Andre Corbin has started a blog that he plans to continue while he is in Afghanistan. It's at http://Corbinistan.com and he has set it up as a Kindle subscription at Amazon. He has two posts up so far, and is clearly a talented writer.

I gave a K2 to my son for Christmas. He is stationed in Germany, deploying soon to "the sandbox." I crammed it full of everything you can imagine. It's got (once you include the various "complete works of..." books) close to 1,000 books to choose from. Sure, the WN doesn't work there, but who really needs it. He looks at it as his own personal library that he can take with him anywhere. I can't tell you the number of times he's thanked me for that.

You probably could download book files to your computer, put them on a USB thumb drive and send that to Afghanistan, so he could upload to his Kindle ... might work.

I had a Kindle 1 in Afghanistan, I just downloaded my books to my laptop and moved them over by USB.
