Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Lot's of insructions to take, eh?

Chapter Eleven - To Wei-tang

1 - With Lu Xing and bradley showing up, do you think we see another prison??

2 - Who got the better of the deal with books or Thunderer?

Chapter Twelve - Cousin Yu-t'an's Fiddle

ou must indulge me in this chapter as I entertain you, but this slipback to the Ch'en family history was something I had never intended to write, but somehow it came out and running it by Peg of the red Pencil, I got an oooh and and aaahh. and thus it stayed.

1 - Why would the Ch'en maintain a farm? (Think Chinese traditional cultural hierarchy)

2 - What's Bradley's rel problem?

Chapter Thirteen - Under the brazen Prayer

1 - Another gift to my readers, the traditional southrn Chinese house is designed principally with what in mind? 2 things.

2 - How did Lu Xing's entry into the Acestral hall stike you?

Chapter Fourteen - A Palaver Befitting a Prince

1 - Have you ever slept in a a Chinese bed cabinet Wouldn;t you like to sleepin one?

2 - The palaver is a focusing point? What has been decided?

Chapter Fifteen - The Cock' Crow

1 - What is the significance of the Widow's Gate in China (we've often seen them and perhaps think that they ae similar of the torii o Japanese culture, but . . .)

2 - What is Lu Xing's motiation for taking the actions that he has taken?

Chapter Sixteen - The Water Wheel

(an aside - part of this chapter is a twin to a chapter in The Academician)

1 - What is sericulture? (Peg wanted me to drop the word as she said no one would know, but I decided to leave it in).

2 - Nohing like a little skinny dipping to change to mood, but where have we seen Nick's ritualistic dance before? And what's with the bees?

Chapter Seventeen - The breaking of the Tien-xin rite

1 - Well here we are - full disclosue of theNiu-wa story. Any surprises?

It's important that you digest this chapter.

Chapter Eighteen -  Visit from Pu-tong

1 - Rowden's schme is not transparent here, but cn you give a guess at what he's going to do? If not, don;t worry, t'll all make sense.

Chapter Nineteen - The Tarnished Tawny

1 - Yu K'ang and Gou Pi are a villainous duo. What historical figure did I base Gou Pi's phsiognomy on?

2 - Rowden's plan turns on which one of the seven deadly sins?

3 - The tomb key when given to Lu Xing becomes what? (Trick question)

Chapter Twenty - Looking Westward

1 - What do you think has happened to Nick when he wakes?

2 - The rice paddy scene (which was written a full three years before Avatar  Grin) transfers certain responsibilties? Which ones and to whom?

3 - What do you think of Canto now - Niu-tsai, the Cowboy?

Note: When we started our journey back in The Jade owl, we spent most of our time in Hotels. In the Third peregrination we were in Chinese homes. Now we are in the countryside. I think I'll keep you there for the rest of the book. Feel and breath the real China, the one the People know.

Chapter Eleven

1 - With Lu Xing and bradley showing up, do you think we see another prison??
I hope not.  I think they’ll be able to get the group out of any trouble they are in.

2 - Who got the better of the deal with books or Thunderer?  I think the books were a better deal.  I think Rowden thinks so too.

If I’m not mistaken, farming was an extremely important role in ancient China and farmers were held in very high esteem and could become very rich due to their large parcels of land and the food they produced for the society.  They were basically part of the “upper class” even though they weren’t called that.

2 - What's Bradley's rel problem?  He’s jealous?  I think he also feels used.

Chapter Thirteen - Under the brazen Prayer

1 - Another gift to my readers, the traditional southrn Chinese house is designed principally with what in mind? 2 things.
  Symmetry and the interior gardens?

2 - How did Lu Xing's entry into the Acestral hall stike you?  Very interesting.  He thinks back on the past with fondness and expresses remorse and guilt for some of his actions for The People.

Chapter Fourteen - A Palaver Befitting a Prince

1 - Have you ever slept in a a Chinese bed cabinet Wouldn;t you like to sleepin one?
I haven’t, but yes I would like to.  I want to stay in one of the rooms and eat dim sum.

2 - The palaver is a focusing point? What has been decided?  They have decided to find the village of Yu-shui-ch’ien with help from Liu Pang, so they can rescue Silky and Tadzio.  The boys have just become everyone’s number one priority and Rowden suspects that if they rescue them, the other stuff will fall into place.

Chapter Fifteen - The Cock' Crow

1 - What is the significance of the Widow's Gate in China (we've often seen them and perhaps think that they ae similar of the torii o Japanese culture, but . . .)
A memorial for rich men whose remains are missing.  Built by their wife.

2 - What is Lu Xing's motiation for taking the actions that he has taken?  Some is because he trusts Rowden, some because he feels guilt for what happened at Old Sheep, but I think his main motivation is because he is grateful for the kindness that Rowden showed his nephew?  Or was it son?  In the worst circumstances.  He’s got Moe to remember him by.

Chapter Sixteen - The Water Wheel

(an aside - part of this chapter is a twin to a chapter in The Academician)

1 - What is sericulture? (Peg wanted me to drop the word as she said no one would know, but I decided to leave it in).
I assume it is the growing of silkworms in mulberry trees then harvesting the silk.

2 - Nohing like a little skinny dipping to change to mood, but where have we seen Nick's ritualistic dance before? And what's with the bees? This dance is the same one the boy did in the scene we saw through the world egg.  The Great Marshal dance to the dragons, if you will.  Meng used the bees to protect Nick while he repossesses his own body.

Chapter Seventeen - The breaking of the Tien-xin rite

1 - Well here we are - full disclosue of theNiu-wa story. Any surprises?
Not really.  Why did I know that the Jade Owl was the Great Marshal, but the ch’i-t’ang didn’t?

It's important that you digest this chapter.

Chapter Eighteen -  Visit from Pu-tong

1 - Rowden's schme is not transparent here, but cn you give a guess at what he's going to do? If not, don;t worry, t'll all make sense.
Yes, but only because I’ve read ahead already.

Chapter Nineteen - The Tarnished Tawny

1 - Yu K'ang and Gou Pi are a villainous duo. What historical figure did I base Gou Pi's phsiognomy on?
  Chairman Mao?

2 - Rowden's plan turns on which one of the seven deadly sins?  Greed, for sure.

3 - The tomb key when given to Lu Xing becomes what? (Trick question)  Payment for all Lu Xing has done to help?

Chapter Twenty - Looking Westward

1 - What do you think has happened to Nick when he wakes?
He seems to be transformed.  His chi powers seem to be more controlled and powerful.

2 - The rice paddy scene (which was written a full three years before Avatar   ) transfers certain responsibilties? Which ones and to whom?  Meng is no longer the Keeper of the egg.  Canto is now the keeper.  And I’m not sure, but Nick seems to have taken on some of the talents of the Preserver.

3 - What do you think of Canto now - Niu-tsai, the Cowboy?  While I wasn’t surprised to see that he had stolen the egg, I was surprised to see his remorse over it.  I think he’ll prove to be trustworthy.

Your right on track, DNAGirl. Please forgive all the typos in the last entry - it ws late at night. I'm working hard on The People's treasure (Jade Owl 4) and some days I'm a rubbery wreck (if it doesn't make me excited or weepy, it'll leave everyone asleep).

2 things - The Merchant class in China has traditionally been the lowest class. Farming gave merchant's status.

Chinese houses are built with symetry, but all designed for "air flow."

The tomb key will be referred to by a different name in the next book. It will be called The People's Treasure.

I rather think their purpose is to, perhaps, keep people out of Prison!
Quote

2 - Who got the better of the deal with books or Thunderer?
I have the impression the books are a 'power' artifact -- or will at least lead to something that is and Thunderer is simply a historic artifact, though those with power already may be able to use it as more than a walking stick

It seems to me it's sort of a way to keep them in touch with their roots. . .and their history before the Revolution. . . . .
Quote
2 - What's Bradley's rel problem?
He's been in love with Nick since day one. . . .and can't have him. . . . .
Quote
Chapter Thirteen - Under the brazen Prayer

1 - Another gift to my readers, the traditional southrn Chinese house is designed principally with what in mind? 2 things.
Something akin to feng shui. . . .proper orientation to best take advantage of the ch'i of the world. . . .also to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter.

Incidentally, you use the word "brazen" quite properly to mean made of or coated in bronze. . . . .is there meant to be any secondary meaning. . .as in "brazen" meaning "to have a lot of nerve"?  My recollection is that meaning is derived from some sort of bronze mask worn so one could do things they'd otherwise perhaps be ashamed of. . . .
Quote

2 - How did Lu Xing's entry into the Acestral hall stike you?
I believe he was respectful of the Ch'en family. . . .perhaps he hadn't realized before just how deep their roots were into Chinese history
Quote
Chapter Fourteen - A Palaver Befitting a Prince

1 - Have you ever slept in a a Chinese bed cabinet Wouldn;t you like to sleepin one?
Never have. . .  . . . . I expect such would be very attractive to little kids as it's more or less a hidey hole. Cheesy
Quote
2 - The palaver is a focusing point? What has been decided?
They've finally decided that they have to (1) save Tadzio and Silky (2) save the Ch'en family and (3) as a side benefit, save the world.  Cheesy
Quote

Chapter Fifteen - The Cock' Crow

1 - What is the significance of the Widow's Gate in China (we've often seen them and perhaps think that they ae similar of the torii o Japanese culture, but . . .)
No idea. . . .
Quote
2 - What is Lu Xing's motiation for taking the actions that he has taken?
He still appreciates what Nick and Rowdy tried to do for his nephew when they were in prison -- that's what really opened his eyes to the extent of the corruption in the system. . .He believes in the rule of law and will act accordingly, but also understands extenuating circumstances and is capable of mercy.  Plus, at this point, I think he's just as curious as the others as to how it will all play out.

Chapter Sixteen - The Water Wheel

(an aside - part of this chapter is a twin to a chapter in The Academician)

1 - What is sericulture? (Peg wanted me to drop the word as she said no one would know, but I decided to leave it in).
Well, but with Kindle it's so easy to look up.  Wink  Though I admit I didn't do so Roll Eyes . . . .hmmm. . . .puzzling it out. . . .some kind of more or less agricultural pursuit. . . . . .aren't the Chinese big on silk?. . . .yes. . .just googled it and it's silkworm farming. . . .cool.
Quote

2 - Nohing like a little skinny dipping to change to mood, but where have we seen Nick's ritualistic dance before? And what's with the bees?
I recall he did the dance before but don't recall where. . . .didn't follow why the bees protected him unless it's just a by product of the level of ch'i that surrounds him.
Quote

Chapter Seventeen - The breaking of the Tien-xin rite

1 - Well here we are - full disclosue of theNiu-wa story. Any surprises?
more or less what I figured I guess. . . .good to have it spelled out.

Chapter Eighteen -  Visit from Pu-tong

1 - Rowden's schme is not transparent here, but cn you give a guess at what he's going to do? If not, don;t worry, t'll all make sense.
  I didn't guess. . . .but it was a good plan. . . .

Greed!  (coupled with a bit of Envy.)

3 - The tomb key when given to Lu Xing becomes what? (Trick question)
  O.K. . . . . .I guess  you tricked me. . . . .Huh
Quote
Chapter Twenty - Looking Westward

1 - What do you think has happened to Nick when he wakes?
He's been in another time. . . .has a fuller understanding now than even the others. . . . .
Quote
2 - The rice paddy scene (which was written a full three years before Avatar  Grin) transfers certain responsibilties? Which ones and to whom?
Canto has become the keeper of the egg. . . . .Rowdy was kind of in charge, but I think now Nick will mostly be. . . .not sure what else, if anything
Quote
3 - What do you think of Canto now - Niu-tsai, the Cowboy?
I totally get why he wanted to check out the dino egg. . .heck, it's his field and he identified the species. . . .I think now he is beginning to realize that there's more to it than just fossils to be dug up, however. . . .probably a good thing. . . .

Related note:  did you see that they're re-making The Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and setting it in China? . . . .saw a movie trailer for it last evening. . . .coming out this summer, I think.

Quite on track, Ann:

a. Wait to you see thunderer in action.  Grin
b. In China, the merchat class is the lower class. So, Merchants would pusue agriculture for social mobility. It's one of those reversals that in the West Merchants are usually better off socially than farmer. (It's like in China Silver is more values than Gold).
c - Because of b. "brazen" is a secondary meaning, because the Prayer presumes to elevate the family's social status.
d. Lu Xing has been destroying traiditonal culture as a product of the cultural revolution. It's a moment of remorse.
e. One of my great dreams is to build a Chinese cabinet bed and sleep every night in it.
f. Widow's gates are built by widows duh) who have not recovered their husband's remains, a big deal in China keeping the body intact in burial. They dot the Chinese contryside. Some think they are the source of the Japanese Torii, but no. Torii are gateways for the spirit way - shin-to.
g. The dance was performed in the World Egg vision at Lung-hua (and you'll see it again in the next book). The bees protect the dancer from threat and it perceives Rose and Simone as a threat.
h. - The change to Nick is from one being to another - from Nick the spooky to Nick the fully possessed (again)
i. - Gou P'i physiognomy is patterned on Chairman Mao. (o much for my welcome mat at Chinese booksignings - but that will go completely away when I describe some stuff in the next book that would be censored as a matter of course by the police).
j. The key is The People's Treasure.
k. I did see the trailer and it's set in the Bei-jing hu-tungs (at least what remains of them).
