My good friend and co-worker recently bought a Kindle.  I'd like to think I had something to do with it, especially since I did nothing but drop hints and rave about it for an endless amount of time.  She has become especially fond of it, as we all can relate to, albiet much to her own suprirse.

To the point, the purchase was off of eBay for a new Kindle2.  Last night, she tripped and somehow managed to step on her Kindle2!  She is beside herself.  Alas, despite my nagging and pushing and even sending squaretrade.com codes, she failed to purchase an extended warranty.

Is there any recourse to be had or is she done for?

Have her call Amazon KINDLE Customer support, it may still be within normal warranty. Make sure it is KINDLE CS, not regular CS.

She can try Kindle CS, but wouldn't hold my breath.  Hopefully she'll just buy from Amazon next time so that they'll be more likely to help her.... and so that she'll be eligible for a Square Trade warranty with accidental breakage coverage.  Sometimes it's just not worth it to cut corners to save a few pennies.

How horrible! Amazon may be willing to "fix" it for $200. Basically, she would send in the broken one and they would replace it for $200. Make sure she calls Kindle CS, like BTack pointed out!

if it is still covered by Amazon's warranty, they don't care if it was bought on Ebay, they will replace it.

She called and apparently they are going to replace for FREE!  She is quite thrilled, relieved, excited!

Hopefully she will go and purchase the squaretrade warranty now!

Thanks for all your input!

She can only buy the warranty within the set number of days of purchase. Unless they have changed it that is the original date of the original kindle purchased. So, that would be the date the person who sold it on ebay bought it. If they send a replacement under warranty, the remainder of the warranty is from the original purchase date from Amazon.

Methinks your friend is no doubt a fan now! Glad she's getting a new Kindle, and tell her to invest in a nice cover!

You know, I can't think of other company which has the high level of customer service and support that Amazon does for the Kindle.  However, this might also be true with all of Amazon's customer service people.

Even when I have ended up talking to an outsourced rep in another country, they are very polite and good at their jobs.  I know from many bad calls with other companies outsourced reps, that this is not true a good portion of the time.

I kind of see Amazon as the online equivalent of Costco, who is also an exceptional company especially in how well they treat their employees, but I don't know what their customer service is like.

Thank-you Amazon for the Kindle, I am reading print again after being away from it for 15 years because of decreasing vision.  I never walk out my front door without my Kindle DXG and Fire, they have been both liberating and life changing for me.  Thanks again.  Sincerely, Gene

I think that Amazon makes most money from selling the books and the cost of producing the kindle is not all that great. It is good customer service but the $ that people spend on books is much higher.

She definitely needs to protect her new Kindle by buying a good cover for it.

I think the convenience factor also plays a role in it.

That is really great. I'm so impressed w/ Amazon's Kindle Customer Service. She must have felt horrible when it happened;
it's nice this has such a happy ending. I hope she does purchase the warranty; it is SO worth it, just for the peace of mind.

The Amazon extended warranty covers one accidental damage claim, and extends the 1 year to two years. SquareTrade is a third party company that offers warranties for up to 3 years (someone correct me if I am wrong about that) and will cover accidental damage. If you got your warranty with the Kindle, it was most likely the Amazon extended warranty

I can vouch for the Amazon warranty, I just used it Friday.  My screen on my K2 (US version) quit working.  I call Amazon tech and they transferred me to the warranty division.  My kindle was purchased on Feb 25, 2009 so the orginial warranty was no longer good and I had to use the Amazon extended.  I still have the extended until Feb 2011.  They did not ask if I accidentally dropped it or anything (I didn't).  But they did say I still have coverage for anything that happens to it.  Very easy transaction, the new kindle (the international version) was on my porch when I got up this morning.

Squaretrade is an independent company where you can purchase warrenties for many different products.
Sometimes their price is better; sometimes not.

I swear by SquareTrade.  I have at least a dozen things under warranty with them.  They have rebated $ for 3 items over the past few years with no questions asked.  I bought SquareTrade with my Kindle back when they (SquareTrade) didn't know what K was and had to put it in under computers.  I didn't even belong to these boards yet...that was when I was a member of the darkside...lol.
I just signed on with my Keurig last week.

Do you just send them the broken item? Or just tell them that it's not working? I just bought a warranty for a camera lens, but I'm not quite sure how it works. Thanks.

It depends.  My cell they just refunded.  MP3 had to return...then they refunded.  Printer Dock sent in and they refunded.  They are very quick...usually a week.

More rave reviews for Kindle CS -- if only more companies were so "onto" it.
