I have the Amazon cover and it's very sturdy. I have dropped my kindle more times than I like to admit and it has "survived".
My kindle has a decal girl skin on it. Awhile back I bought an Oberon Creekbed Maple large journal cover so I could slip the Amazon cover in it. However, I don't use it because it is just too bulky to me to have both together. My plan is to order a sky blue Overon in the kindle cover, but I am waiting to see if they are coming out with any new designs.
People have complained of the hinges cracking their kindle, but mine has not had this problem. For the money, I feel the Amazon cover is great, but it would be nice if it came in a large variety of colors.

Tiggeerrific,
I have a Kindle2, and I bought the Amazon case. I like the case, and like you, like that it is light, folds back nice and flat, and the felt inner lining. Also like the fact that it has hinges instead of straps, or velcro. After joining this forum, I learned of the Oberon cases that so many people think of so highly.

I ordered and received the Oberon case "World Trees" yesterday. After seeing these on the web, I liked the look of the "so-called" tooled leather. My only objection was the straps or the Velcro hold down system. So................what I did was get another Amazon case, remove the entire inner lining along with the hinges (it's easy, just peel off, it's glued down). I then removed the sewn down Velcro strips that are on the back panel.(I bought the Velcro version, because I dislike the straps). I then glued down that inner lining to the inside of the Oberon case. Very easy, simple procedure.

I used the entire inner panel from the Amazon case, and covered the inner front cover and inner back cover of the Oberon. I personally do not like the little pocket on the inner front cover of the Oberon case. I see no purpose for it. Can't think of a thing that I would put in it.

If you prefer to keep that feature, simply take the one panel with the hinges, and glue that into the inner back panel of the Oberon.(You will have to cut the panels apart near the hinge)

Now............after doing this, these are my observations to this point. This is only after one day. The entire case with Kindle is heavier. It does not fold back and lay flat, like the Amazon case. This most likely is because the new leather Oberon case is still brand new, and quite stiff yet. I would hope this will change. The Kindle is better protected in the Oberon merely from the thickness of the leather. The clasp on the edge of the Oberon with the bands that go around it, secure the open side.

I decided to do this because I liked the look of the leather case, but did not like the straps or the Velcro hold down system that Oberon uses. I prefer the hinges of the Amazon. My Kindle has a custom skin and the Velcro system was out. Mounting the Velcro on the back of the Kindle would have ruined the skin. I really didn't want to do that to it, especially if you decided to read it, as they say, naked!

This sounds like a lot of work and some expense to go through, however, we all have different tastes, and to me it was worth the effort to get the look that I wanted.

The Oberon case is elegant, however, I still have an Amazon case to utilize, should I decide to change cases for whatever. One word of caution, if you like the fact that the Kindle is lightweight, you may not like the added weight from adding the Oberon case.

Hope this is a help to you!!!!!!!!!!

Tiggeerrific,

In my previous post to you, I didn't say that it could not be folded back. It folds back, however, being brand new, the leather is somewhat stiff. I'm assuming this will soften with use. However, I don't think it will ever become as pliable as the Amazon case. The Amazon case is   thinner in cross section. Aside from the added protection, should you accidently drop your reader, and the LOOK of the tooled leather, there is really no advantage to the Oberon case.

I will say, it really looks stylish, and the clasp is classy looking.

I would post pictures, but being new to this forum, not sure of the procedure, and can't find any how-to on these boards. I'm a MAC user, so any Windows procedures are useless.

I'm confident that you would like the look of the Oberon, however, with a DX, that's a $130.00 investment. Whether that is worth that much only you can decide.

Good Luck,

The Oberon covers will fold back. Mine is brand new, and is folding back almost completely flat. I have the Dragonfly Pond cover, which has the design only on the front, and I have no creasing along the spine from folding the cover back. You can see a ton of Oberon pics in Oberon picture thread. If you don't see any pics of the Oberon folded back, just ask, I'm sure someone will gladly post for you!

I had the Amazon cover and it was really nice and sturdy (though I thought it smelled a really bad chemical smell).  Though I did like it, I sold it because I really fell in love with the look of the Oberons.  Now I have 2 Oberons.  There is nothing wrong with the Amazon cover though, other than the smell and I'm sure that would have subsided in time.
