Can you browse through a kindle book like a paper book and mark the page to return to?

Welcome to Kindleboards!

Yes, you can page through a book.  You can bookmark pages, add actual notes to them, or highlight lines--either way, you'll be able to go back to that spot.

thank you so much for your response! i'm thinking of finally breaking down and getting a kindle: i travel a lot with a lot of books that i need to refer to spontaneously, selecting passages or poems as the need arises during sessions that i lead. i typically thumb through until the the "right one" reveals itself, then i read it aloud. the books weigh me down on the road, so i'm thinking the kindle will be a great way to make this much easier on me. is it easy to make notes on the pages as well? and do you like your kindle? is there anything you don't like about it?

bookmarking, highlighting, and taking notes is easy.  I combine them often, so I will bookmark the start of a chapter and add a note saying something like "section where thus and such character is introduced' or "use this for teaching"

You can then browse your own notes and marks, so easily and quickly go through your own notes to find a passage you marked or highlighted ahead of time.

After I bought my favorite books for my Kindle, I went ahead and bookmarked all my favorite places, the places that are all worn down in my paperback.

I spent my subway ride home tonight bookmarking and highlighting my Complete Works of Shakespeare to make it easier to find my favorite passages.  Quite easily done.

Agreed.  Since I study English Literature, I have to read a lot of books and write essays on all of them.  I recently had to use a paperback version, since no ebook version was available.  At the same time, I was using the ebook version of another title.  My paperback started falling apart after a single read!  I hate writing in books, so it's covered with little post-it notes.  Good luck to me finding a particular note, even though they are colour-coded.

Using the Kindle, however, is a breeze.  I highlight important parts to quote in my essay, I can search for any keyword and see a list of the sentences in which they appear.  I was able to refer to the fact that the word "party" appears in Mrs Dalloway 58 times, because electronic books can count each instance the word appears.  When I quote text in my essays, I can copy and paste them straight out of the My Clippings text file into my Word document.

My heart sinks when I have to use a paper book instead of the Kindle.
