I am thinking about getting a kindle, but I am still trying to decide between iPod Touch and kindle. I mainly need a device for reading, taking notes and checking email. I have read that you can check hotmail or gmail with the kindle, but can you also check the mobile me mail? (me.com) Are there restrictions as to what websites you can look at with the kindle?
Thanks, Amalthea

I haven't tried checking mobile me email, but the best way to know is if there's a mobile version of the me.com website. If there's a mobile version of the website, you can most likely access it easily from the Kindle. If not, it's going to be more difficult, and unwieldy, but probably not impossible. It's not a great email-checking device, though, even for mobile websites. Kindle doesn't restrict in any censorious way the websites you can access (as far as I know, at least).

There are no restrictions, but only mobile (mostly text based) sites will render properly on the Kindle. Here's a thread I started years ago with some pics of websites: Web Browsing

I think if you need to read a lot of email on the go you will be disappointed with the Kindle. On the other hand, if you plan to read a lot of books on the ipod touch you may very well be disappointed with that experience as well. Which will be your primary use?

I think my primary use would definitely be reading books. I just thought it would be great to have to possibility to check email when I am say traveling without having to take a laptop. I don't own an iPhone or Blackberry... I looked at the Nook today and was pretty disappointed. The navigation is horrible in my eyes. I would love to try out the Kindle somehow before buying it but I guess that's pretty much impossible... Don't know which one to buy I love the iPod touch but I can see that reading a lot on it would really hurt my eyes...

FYI reading emails on a Kindle sucks! I use my phone for that.

OK, thanks for your information everybody. Like I said, I don't have a smartphone and I can't really afford to buy two devices, so I have to find the one that fits best for me. Thanks for your advice.

Perhaps a bit strongly worded. But it is relatively slow and cumbersome and I wouldn't recommend the Kindle as your main e-mail reader on the go. . . . .good for a now and again thing when you've got to send something and there's nothing else handy. . . .but I expect most people would consider the interface too slow and clunky to want to use it regularly for such . . . . . . . If you mainly want to read, the Kindle is the answer. Of course that's just my opinion. . . . . But if you do use the integrated browser for e-mail, don't expect it to be as easy and responsive as a computer or smart phone. . . . .

I love love love my kindle. But if I had to choose between my Kindle and my iPhone, my iPhone would win hands down, not even a question. If I didn't have an iPhone and had to choose between and iPod Touch and a Kindle, the iPod Touch would win. I do occasionally use my kindle to check email when I'm upstairs reading in bed and don't want to trek downstairs and get out from under the covers. It's good for reading, not so much responding. It would work in a pinch and on a trip would be fine, I think, instead of bringing a laptop.

I agree with the above. I've actually managed to get to MapQuest for directions while hubby was driving down the interstate. But....it wasn't exactly fun (finding MapQuest - the trip was fine....)
