Wow a lot goes on when you don't check in for a few days (or a week).  Looks like I'm the only one who thinks Dougal is a power serving scum bag.  I'm going to have to go back and read some of the Dougal (and Dougal with Colum) parts with everyones comments in mind.  At least I'm not the only one having trouble with the names.  I found a couple of sites that help with people names. Thanks for the links; they have been helpful.  I've started highlighting the words I need to look up and Google them when I get near a computer.  So far that has worked pretty well.  Usually the first few sites (maybe more) have been about Outlander.  I like this site, it's favorite Jamie quotes http://www.lallybroch.com/LOL/jamieout.html but I don't want to read too much of it; don't want to spoil any surprises the book may have for me.

I think I may have gotten ahead of myself with that.  Sometimes it's hard to keep things straight.

New questions tomorrow and another five chapters to read.   Grin

D'oh! I think I have one chapter to finish. I'll read that tomorrow and then get started on the next set...

Just wanted to pop in & say that I'm reading along with y'all - I didn't raise my hand for the book club, but I seem to be keeping up with the reading schedule (actually a tad ahead) and am enjoying reading everyone's take on things.  Just kinda lurking.  I'm enjoying it - probably never would've picked it up on my own.

Gertie, yes, pickled herring...pickled herring & pickled herring....some kind of stew, lots of beer, wine & hard liquor. Then some nice flatbreads, crackers & vegetables..... I happened to like pickled herring on crackers or by itself. It's very healthy. I don't know alot about Scottish food, only that there is a bloody something organ/gizzard something that some people eat. Usually when I know someone that has traveled to another country or right here in the states, I grill them on the food. I've only heard of Jay Leno talk about the food. Don't know anyone personally that went there. Basically, everyone brings food & whoever wants to posts pics & give recipes. Will have to keep reading more to see what kinds of foods that are written about. I'm am now getting very hungry. Smiley

Hmmm, I haven't gotten to the maggot part yet. But I recall the scene in Gladiator where they put the maggots in Maximus's shoulder. Admittedly gross, but a much better alternative than gangrene...

OK, I've watched Gladiator several times and never realized that's what they did.  (I'm usually quilting while I watch movies, so I miss stuff sometimes).  Now I'm going to have to look for it!

As for leeches, here's my leech story:  my husband and I had been swimming in a pond on top of a mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine, and were dripping dry on a rock next to the pond when we realized five inch long black leeches had come out of the pond and were on the rocks looking for us.  They stood on one end and waved in the air as if scenting for us.  It was like something out of a very bad sci-fi movie.....  Attack of the Giant Leeches....

I've got to start reading!!!!  Haven't started the next section of Outlander...

I'm running a little late on the questions, although I'm not really late for another hour.  I have been reading the Passport to Peril series.  Apparently, if you are from Iowa, if you are an hour early, you are on time and if you arrive at the appointed time, you are already late.

I'll be back before noon.

Join in anytime.  So many people would not pick up this book, thinking it's your standard, so-called historical romance novel.  It's hard to explain and harder to accept what it really is until you've read the book.

Not like the singing leeches in Flushed Away, I gather.

Whoa, a full-body kilt wedgie.  Jan is a very talented lady.  If she ever gets attacked in Scotland, the mugger doesn't stand a chance.

You would love my mother and neighbor.  They go into ecstasy over herring.

Oh, I just throw in a Harry Potter reference whenever I find an opening.  If I can't find an opening, I'll make one.   Grin

Butterbeer:

12 oz Root Beer or Cream Soda
1/4 Cup coffee cream
1 Tbs butterscotch topping

There are a lot of recipes out there.  A lot of them call for ice cream.  Some of them include alcohol, but it's a non-alcoholic drink, only toxic to house elves.

*SongbirdVB - that's it.
*Gertie, thanks for the recipe. I love Harry Potter!! Wish the series was on my Kindle. I didn't get the last book, not the series, that just came out a few weeks ago. Did you get it? Yes, herring was good. I ate it straight up. It's also vera healthy. LOL! Oh, BTW, my nephew Seth, kind of looks like & moves like, has the personality of Harry Potter AKA Daniel R. Other people have noticed it too, so it's a running joke betwen us.
*Yes, Jan is a hoot & vera, vera strong. The weird part is after seeing your previous pic here, I can already imagine what you sound like when talking.

You're welcome.  We all wish for a Kindled HP.  Oh, well, maybe in my grandchildrens' lifetime.

Yes.  I got Tales of Beedle the Bard the day it came out. I got the standard version, but it has a very nice hard cover.

I'm running a Potter Book Club at my grandson's school.  The kids are a hoot.  They are so enthusiastic.  They want to do a skit, as well, and they don't know it yet, but I'm planning a Tri-Wizard Tournament for them.

*Will have to re-think getting that book then.
*Thank you for the recipe.
*I hope not. I'm still really hoping that I'll be seeing the Harry Potter series come out. Lets all tell her to get with the program. Smiley

3) When you read that Claire thought she could get back "home" from Ft. William, were you hoping she would succeed or fail? (your first impression, please!!)

Just doing a little catching up here (somebody catch Gertie - she's probably fainting! LOL!). Not gonna answer everything, but this one: Well, aside from not wanting her to get back right away because it would make for a really short book (ha!), I was - and still am - hoping she won't get back, at least not for a while. Well, maybe ever. Despite the rather tough conditions, it would certainly be an interesting place and time to live... Grin
