What do you think about Mel Gibson as Dougal? And we need to find a really good character for Sean Connery (a good guy preferably).

Mel is just too short.  Dougal is nearly as big as Jamie.  Maybe Mel could be Colum.  Now that I think about it, he would be a perfect Colum.

Unfortunately Sean Connery has retired.  He wouldn't even come out of retirement to play Dr. Jones, Sr.

I think Jim Broadbent could be Ned Gowan.

I don't know if anyone is still checking this thread but I was thought of an actor that maybe good to play Frank/Jack.

Matthew Macfadyen who played Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice.  He's 34 and I think he could play Frank and Black Jack.  I wonder if they're planning to get the same actor to play both parts?

I think it would be essential to use the same actor for both parts.  Otherwise, how would Claire confuse Jack with Frank when she goes back.

I wish we knew more about the progress of this project.  They wanted to start filming in the Spring, but I haven't even seen anything about choosing a director, much less casting.   Undecided

Love Jason Isaacs as Black Jack --- sends chills down my spine!  Jamie?Huh Simon Woods, Shawn Ashmore or Ewan McGregor -- please not Matthew McG.  He's just too "used" looking!

Simon Woods - he's 5'11"

Shawn Ashmore - Also 5'11" and kind of skinny

Ewan McGregor - Only 5'9"  Way too short

All three have a good look, but just too small for Jamie.  I don't mind a minimum of 6' as long as he's built like a brick ...  I know I'm way too fussy, but I've been searching for the right guy to play Jamie since 1991.  So far, the best one I've seen is Karl Urban.

I can't wait to see who the producers come up with.

Gertie, 5'11" is how much shorter than 6'?   Maybe the producers could do special effects.   I'll agree Ewan McGregor is probably too short.  Still like Simon Wood and Shawn Ashmore.  Am sure it will be a success if Brad Pitt or Leo DeCaprio or Matthew McGon (how do ya spell it?) are not involved.  Maybe they'll find an unknown and make him a big star!

I'm thinking it might be an unknown - but who knows.  A few years ago I might've picked Liam Neeson for Jamie (yes, he's Irish - but he was wonderful in Rob Roy).  So if we can pick young Mel, I'd pick young Liam.  Now, though, I almost hope it's an unknown.

I'm compromising on 6' since Jamie is 6'4".  I have to draw the line somewhere and that's my stopping point.

I really liked Simon in Pride & Prejudice and he has the looks.

I agree, an unknown would probably be best.  When we see the actor, we should just see Jamie, not the star.

There have to be a lot of unknown hunks out there that could play Jamie, Claire, Dougal, etc., etc.  Just wish they would get with it LOL  Angry

I haven't even heard if they got a director yet.  I don't know how they expect to start shooting in the Spring.  It's not that far away.  Maybe, knowing all about us rabid fans and Jamie lovers, they are keeping it under wraps for fear of us burying them under a mound of inedible haggis.   Grin

I think an excellent reference for Jason Isaacs as Jack Black is the live action Peter Pan movie that came out a few years ago.

Jason Isaacs played both Mr. Darling and Captain Hook.  He was astonishing.  But I've always been a sucker for Captain Hook.

I am trying to remember his name. I think it's Huge Jackson. He looks like what I think Dougal looks like.

Do you mean Hugh Jackman?. . . . if so, I'm pretty sure he's been discussed before.  (some might say ad nauseum Smiley)

I forgot to check again. Sorry. I think that's the name. If he was discussed already, then we all somehow found the same guy. That's pretty funny. Smiley I don't think I ever saw him in a movie or TV show. I saw a graphite drawing of him & asked the artist the name of the man.

Huge Jackson --- fanning myself!  He could be a good fit for Dougal.

You two need to go check out the Australia thread in Not Quite Kindle.  Also there's one called 'stump leslie' or something like that.  Smiley

I haven't been able to find any updates, but I was cruising YouTube and found the following video (unfortunately it says "embedding disabled by request" - why would they do that?), but here's the link. I really enjoyed the way this was put together.

Thanks Ceg.  There are a number of home made Outlander videos.  That is a good one.

You can embed it by copying the URL, click on the youtube button above, and paste the url.  Here it is.

who is the producer/director?

Essential Entertainment optioned the rights.  Randy Wallace (Braveheart) has done the treatment and they were supposed to be sending it out to directors last November.  Shooting was supposed to begin in April.  So far, no announcements of any sort since November.  Looks like another failed attempt to bring Jamie and Claire to the big screen.
