So I'd like to know about the whole hinges thing and the problem with Kindle cracking. I'm petrified to use a hinge system due to that.

BUT I do like the look of the Medge Prodigy cover and a few others that use the hinges.

Should I be worried? Is it that serious and likely to happen or?

I'm sort of assuming all hinges are the same..is there one brand or another that work better?
Thanks!

In general, the cracking issue was limited to the original Amazon cover.  It wasn't really the fault of the hinges so much as it was easy to mistake the front from the back, and when you tried to open the cover backwards, the plastic of the Kindle frame could crack at the hinge points.  That case was redesigned with a strap to hold the rear of the device to the rear cover.

The M-Edge uses corners on the right hand side along with hinges on the left, so it's a non issue.  But in doing that, you lose the advantage of the hinge design--you no longer have the floating look.

I can't really add much to what VictoriaP said, because she explained it so well, so I'll just add this:
I have 2 Prodigy's and love them, especially with the e-luminator light;
You shouldn't have any problem with cracking;
the m-edge is a great system;

I've been using the original Amazon case since I got my K2 back in February 2009 with no problems at all.  I do use commonsense measures such as not allowing the K2 to hang from the hinges, not opening the cover backwards, etc.  I wouldn't hesitate one second to buy another hinged cover.

I love the look of the hinges and owned an m-edge prodigy with the hinges and corner straps. I was very careful with it and my case didn't crack, but I did notice around one of the slots that the hinge fits in that it appeared to be separating the front and back of the kindle, and now it squeaks if I push on that area. I was afraid to keep using it for fear that it would crack or separate more so I quit using the hinges.

I know many people have these covers and love them.  I have an M-edge Prodigy and don't use it because, for some reason, it just creeps me out to stick those pieces of metal in the side of my Kindle.  I've read very few instances of them cracking the Kindle, and that was usually operator error, but I just can't get past it, it bothers me, so I don't use any of the covers with the hinge system.  My Noreve rocks!!

I think its a matter of personal preference. I started with an Amazon cover since it came with mine (kindle and cover were a gift from my parents) and before I ever heard about the hinge issue I didn't like it. I always had trouble believing that the hinges would hold lol. I am very careful with my things, but when I got my K2 I was watching my 1 yr old grandson on a regular basis and was always worried that he would pop the kindle off or they would get loose. I like the designs that have the corner pockets or straps. I actually own the m-edge platform and latitude. The latitude is the best for travel and for grandsons lol. As I said though, it is a matter of preference and maybe lifestyle. Another nice thing about the latitude is that it is great for my purse and nothing gets in between the case and the kindle.

I have the re-designed Amazon cover and I really like it.  The hinges have been easy to use, I love the clean look, and with the new design it's much more difficult to make the mistake of opening it from the wrong side.
