I was just reading some of the other threads about the kindle 3 - so does the "introduction of the kindle 3" in August mean it won't actually be available for ordering in August? Sniff. I'm going on vacation to visit my inlaws in their very tiny town in the country in July, and I had reconciled myself with waiting until August to order a kindle 3. But if it's not August, and like a few months later? This is my belated Mother's Day present. I can't decide how patient I want to be.

If Amazon keeps the same pattern as previous releases, then it will be anounced with a pre-order date soon after, but it will be a month or two until the device actually becomes available.

Hmm. So September, October?
I wonder if it's a bad idea to order a Kindle 2 now, with an eye for selling it if the Kindle 3 comes out and looks fabulous.
Your whole kindle books library is easily transferred from kindle to new kindle, right?

Could you back up a little and tell us more about the Kindle 3 coming out-- any details? Links?
Thanks!

If you want it, just get it now. You can always sell it if you decide to get the latest generation when it comes out, but it will be worth it for the months of enjoyment you will get out till then. There are many on the boards here that loved their K1's so much they stuck with it and have no plans to upgrade. I would stick with mine, but my dad wants it! At least that's my excuse!

I'm sure there will be AT LEAST a 30 day window after announcement to reduce the number of returns of K2s. Plus if Amazon holds true they will essentially discontinue the K2 in favor of the K3 (assuming they think it will serve the same market). I'm hoping for a nice price drop as well.

Get the K2 now. Waiting until August simply denies you 3-6 months worth or pleasure. The speculation seems to be that the K3 will be thinner and that is about it.
I am a proud owner of a K1. I was gifted Tavar in October 2008. I cannot imagine waiting until Feburary of 2009 to get a K2. The feature upgrades were not enough to make me wish I had waited. I have a feeling that the same will be true of the K2 to K3 upgrade.
If you end up deciding you want a K3 you can always sell your slightly used K2 for most of its value and use that money to upgrade to the K3.

Thanks everyone. That's kind of what I'm thinking - I love the idea of having it for my vacation in the middle of nowhere. And, the new oberon designs are appealing too!

Kindles when travelling are great. They are great on airplanes because they take up hardly any space. They are great in reducing weight in a suitcase because you don't need to carry a bunch of books with you. They are great because they allow you to carry your entire library with you.
If you are going to someplace with water, I would suggest looking at one of the water proof covers (MEdge Guardian is the new one, I have a water proof sleeve from Trendy Digital, Octovo has a water resistant case) or bring soe ziplock bags with you.

As much as I'm hoping for a Kindle "mini" in August, I wouldn't bet the farm. If you want to hedge your bets, you could get a K2 in July sometime, as they usually let you return and upgrade for "free" if they announce a new version within 30 days of your purchase.
But yeah, it's all just speculation at this point. Worry when you see news about a "press event" scheduled by Amazon.
