cool. . . . .that's good to know. . . .thanks. . . . .not really being in the market I hadn't clicked any further than the main refurb page.  Roll Eyes

I'm not really 'in the market' either, but, you know, the thought of having a(nother) backup for only $139 is rather enticing.... Cheesy

I paid $350 for my K2us in Feb of 2009.
Would do it again. So $189 is great price.
And consider - you have internet connection to Amazon, wikipedia, light browsing, etc for free, forever (we think).

Now consider all the "features" the Kindle has and the free online connectivity for just $189. - wow!

Just sayin.....

What helped me to make my choice was looking at what I was spending buying traditional books from the bookstores and it averaged close to the price of the K2 when they were released.  The lower price of the K2 now makes it a even better deal these days.  If hardback new release titles go for around $25 that's about 7.5 books from a book store for the price of a K2. Or.. you get the K2 and have access to on average much cheaper prices for new releases and thousands of free books, and indie authors who produce great books at great prices.

That sold me at $359.. my wife decided she wanted one a year after I had mine at $259.. so I would say its a even better deal at $189.

Really? Cool, then I don't have to rush. In fact, my anniversary is next month. I'll start hinting that I want one.

Thanks!

And pretty much everyone here can fully support hints for a kindle as a present.  Smiley

Ever since the price drop, I've been talking to my DH about if he'd like a kindle for his birthday in August (he's notoriously bad at giving me hints).  I had him get on inkmesh.com to see if books he'd like are available in e-book form.....needless to say, it took him all of 5 min of looking up books to decide he wanted one.  I just hit the "buy" button for the $139 refurb US version.  I may have pushed him a bit hard to consider it....but at that price (he payed the $259 for mine for my last birthday....totally worth it, imo), I just couldn't pass up a reason to have a second Kindle in the house, lol

Worth it oh yes absoloutely I paid $259 and would do so again.  Now with the price reduction I am trying to talk my 13 year old daughter into one.  She is also a big reader.  I love love love my kindle she comes everywhere with me.  I read more and have discovered so many new authors and there are lots of free books go on spoil yourself you won't regret it.

My sister bought a Kindle for our Mom (she's 83!) a couple of weeks before the price went down. When she heard about the price decrease, she called Amazon. As she started to ask about what could be done, the rep told her no problem we'll credit your card $70 right away. So, if you bought one at the old price, make that phone call. Well, actually, email amazon and when you get the auroreply go to the link no you didn't solve my problem and use the call me link. They really do call you back right away!

I just got one for $189 for my mom for her birthday -- I was surprised that I had to update it -- it was only at 2.3.3.  But she was excited, what a great gift.

My $359 Kindle (the original) paid with itself in free book downloads (both from Amazon and from other sources like Feedbooks, Mobileread, etc).   Imagine how much faster you can pay for a $189 Kindle!  (Or better yet, a refurb.)

Glad you've decided to go for it - hard to go wrong with their 30-day return policy.

My mom called earlier today to say she had seen on either Fox News or Headline News that they predicted ereaders, named Kindle, Nook and she didn't recognize any other name, would be down to $99 by Christmas.

I am sure there will be promotions and discounts that might make that true. Right now, with the Audible promotion, you can already got the Kindle for under $100. Heck, I don't know if it will apply to the refurbs, but if it does, then a refurb US version will only be $39! I spend that much just taking the kids to the movies!

my bet is 159.99 by Christmas, not too much lower.

any lower and it loses its cultural value. its like Ipod vs. Radio shackpod.

don't think Nook or Kindle will go down that road.

I will definitely be gifting this tho.

Would have thought that they could have change the ad in time. But maybe too complicated with it being national. I am sure the price is still $189.

When you look at the weekly ad online, though, and hover over the Kindle ad, it shows $189.  Since the price drop just happened a week ago, they probably didn't get word in time to change the price in the print catalog.  Also people have reported seeing $189 in the stores.

This is my thought also.  I beleive $99 is too low for a Kindle.

$189 is an excellent price IMO. Kindle has now fallen into my gifting budget. And it probably won't get any much lower, so this is the time.

I posted this over in the Special Deals & Discounts area.

For a limited time only receive a Kindle wireless reading device after you spend $250 on your Chase/United Mileage Plus Visa card - valid only for first-time United Mileage Plus Visa cardmembers with new accounts.  Nice deal for those whose credit scores can handle another card - and of course can pay off the card monthly and not rack up interest that ends up costing more than the Kindle itself.  I got my Amazon Chase card when they offered $100 off the K1 for new cardholders & got my daughter's Kindle with that discount.

https://www.thatsaplus.com/MPSignature15AK.aspx

There's a $60 annual fee for the card, but even with that you get a Kindle for $60 if you cancel the card after that first year (or sooner).  Especially for those who've been considering picking up a "back-up" Kindle after the price drop, $60 for a new Kindle is a good deal.
