Sharing Books

Nope.  I don't.  Are libraries illegal?  And when passing around a book you don't keep it forever like you would a digital file.  You return it.  If you want a permanat copy you have to buy your own copy.  Unlike digital files.

Your friends must be different than mine, I never got back half the books I loaned.

Oddly, I've had the opposite problem. . .I'll have a paperback that I give to a friend. . .tell 'em 10 times.  . .I don't need it back, pleae pass it on. . . .but she feels the need to return it when she's done.  Overinflated sense of responsibility, I say.    Hmmm. . . maybe she just has no one else to pass it to. . . .

Paperbacks or hardbacks, I seldom ever got them back without chasing them down. Now, I seldom loan books, so the Kindle won't make much difference for me in that respect. (Assuming it ever comes,sigh)

Has anyone tried transferring a book to an sd card and putting the sd card in another kindle to see if it would come up?  I'm thinking then you could transfer it to Kindle.  I wonder if it would work?  Just a thought...

The purchased books are registered to your Kindle's serial number (from what I understand) therefore it wouldn't work if you put it on another Kindle through the SD card, because the book itself is registered to yours.

I not only back up to my computer (RAID with redundancy), but I have a portable hard drive that I use to back up my i-tunes purchases.  I also back up to DVD, which i-tunes allows, as they remind me periodically to do so.  The files are protected, so no sharing - but I don't have a problem with that - music is cheap enough and if someone likes a song bad enough there are always ways for them to listen (on-line personalized radio) without me having to share.  I do feel differently about books. To me it's a way to promote reading and authors.  I have found many new and wonderful authors by borrowing a book - and I have gone on to purchase the borrowed book and others by the author because of that initial reading.

There is no reason for Apple to keep my purchases - and therefore there is no reason for Amazon to keep my purchases.  In fact, I've been following some chatter about a larger
i-pod touch/e-reader, and I have to admit I'd give up my Kindle for that.  I'd give up my husband before I'd give up my i-pod! LOL!!

I rarely shared paper books and when I did, I accepted the fact that I was giving it away, never to be seen again. No big deal, that's just the way it was.

With the Kindle, I am sharing more since I have a friend on the account with me. She's in California and I am in Maine. There is no way we'd be mailing paper books back and forth but we've probably "co-read" 12-15 books in the past 6 months.

This is a GREAT idea for friends or family who don't live in the same area.  Thanks for the idea.  My husband's grandmother is on the opposite coast and I would love to get her a Kindle. We always talk about books we're reading.  Very cool!

It works great. My friend and I are still friends and we haven't come to blows over sharing the costs of the books. Actually, it's worked out incredibly well.

I will share almost any book (DTV) in my library. There are a few exceptions, including my autographed copy of "Servant of the Bones". Most of the books I share come back to me eventually. Of course, most of the time, I share with my daughters or a very trusted friend.

I don't see any difference in sharing books and giving them away or selling them in a used book store. The authors do not see royalties from that either, but it is still perfectly legal to do.

This is such a great idea -I have been hesitating to talk about books I have read and enjoyed on my Kindle with my sister as we used to mail books back and forth (she is in Maine, I am in California).  Now I think I know what I will have to get her for her birthday! 

I do miss the sharing aspect since receiving my Kindle - I enjoyed passing on books that I liked.

A few people have tried this, it does not work. Each file has DRM embedded that has the Kindle's serial number in it. If the serial number does not match, the file will not open.

No.

The same issue mentioned in the post above yours prohibits this type of transfer.

Each Kindle ebook is registered to the Kindle to which it belongs.

It is possible for authors who publish through KDP to enable sharing and many of us do. I happen to loath DRM for a number of reasons. I don't often share, but I won't by a novel with DRM on it.

Anyone who wants to share any of my novels with a friend or relative is perfectly free to. As far as I'm concerned, you payed for the eBook copy as much as if you buy the paperback version. (Please buy the eBook version. I make more royalties  )
