is going to bankrupt me! And I'm only one person, who works a lot, so I don't have all the leisure time in the world to read, but I can't help myself!! LOL I know I need to do what others here have said they do, with buying an Amazon Gift Card once a month, and when that is spent, you're done for the month.... but goodness... there are SO many good books out there!!  |

I stop myself by reminding myself that I still have lots of books I want to read, so theres no point in buying it now, it will still be there when Im ready for it. What's the use of buying 20 books at the same time? You might even catch them at a discount later on... good luck!

For me, it seems to help if I limit myself to no more than 4-5 unread books at a time. If I am going to get a new book, I have to wait until I am done reading something so that I don't have too many. OR - - I can get a freebie since according to my rules they "don't count". |

I have 498 books on my Kindle right now. Some of those 'books' are periodicals or documents I've transferred, but about 90% are ebooks obtained from amazon.com. Somebody stop me!

LOL, amateurs! I just checked my latest count...and I am over 1000 now. I have read about 350 of them since Dec. '08. It is waaaaayy too easy to grab a few books that look good, and then forget them when they get pushed back a page or two. I have cut my book budget to $20 a month until I hack through some of them. I have actually been reading a bunch of the ones I was so excited about getting, but got sidetracked before I read them! Really fun finding treasures that I already had!

I use 1-click a lot. I now have 909 books in my library, of which, 858 were free; over 800 of them from Amazon! Of those 800 some, over 700 are NOT public domain books. So much for free, so little time to read!  |

I download samples and then keep the ones I like ready to get the book when I finish the one I'm on. Having said that I have a book queue waiting for me - heavenly!

I have a spreadsheet of books I'm either waiting to come down in pri215ce or I want but won't be reading right away. It's currently 215 books long - but it stopped me from buying everything I liked and 1-clicking myself into poverty. (we won't mention the 95 unread books on Sister Yasmini - so it only mostly works ...)
That's a good idea. I have boxes of DTB right now, and most of them, while I love the story, I don't need to hang onto the physical book. I was thinking of doing the same thing and making a list, seeing which are available in Kindle format and then donating the rest. |

Now that i have the upgrade, I use the collections feature to group by samples, books, books to review, and book samples I've read and plan to buy. I don't allow myself to one-click until I've read at least ten of the books I already have--unless a book I want goes on sale. So far that system is working well to keep my buying under control.

I empathize, but the book you want isn't going anywhere. If you think you'll forget, just download samples and keep them as reminders. I generally have no unread books on my K2, just books I'm in the middle of reading. But I have lots of intriguing samples!  |

Wow, FancyNancy, I admire you, no unread books on your Kindle! When I first got my Kindle in January 2010 I was a wild child, I wanted every book I saw or heard about. I've really toned myself down over the past couple of months, pretty much since I put all my books in Collections and realized just how many unread books I have. (194 unread books, 47 samples). I'm doing the Amazon gift card each month and when that's gone, I make myself quit.

In order to curb my 1 click frenzy I download samples. I also have an Amazon wishlist specific to Kindle books. There've been a few books I just knew I wanted, but the samples were so bad, I decided against buying the books.

That's not entirely true. There have been books that have been available for Kindle, that then become unavailable later on. Could be temporary, could be permanent. Could be a publisher thing or an author thing. Or it could become re-available later but several dollars higher. Things change all the time. There's absolutely nothing wrong with buying a book when you see it and want it and it's a price you're willing to pay, and then letting it sit in a TBR stack. It's still not going anywhere, available to you to read, but at least then you don't potentially lose out on it. I've had several samples that I read and go to buy that are no longer available to buy for who-knows-what reason and that's just flat annoying.  |

I am using collections for this purpose also. If I see something I want on sale or free, I get it. When I first got my Kindle, I missed several good deals so I wouldn't have so many unread books. So now, I get the deals when they are available and only pay full price for new releases I really want to read immediately. I have a lot of unread books, but am spending much less money on them. |

I had to quit looking at the "book" threads. It's too easy but today one of my facebook friends mentioned a book she liked. I bought it. There is no escape I guess. Sigh!

I don't care how many unread ebooks I have. To keep the cost down, I look at the Book Bazaar on this forum. I've found great bargains and good books there. Every few days I "go down" to the end and work my way back up the thread for both the free and bargain books threads. Lucky for me that I like a lot of authors who have written lots of books so I won't be running out of sources during my lifetime. One Click doesn't bother me at all |

The amazon gift card has really helped me! I actually sit down and really think about which books I should spend the money on. I use goodreads.com to keep track of all the books TBR. That way I can still remember all the books I want to read without having to buy them until Im reading to actually read them.

I have the one click problem as well. I haven't gone in financial problems, but it is SO easy to click that dang "buy" button! I have tried keeping my samples as other do on this board, but now I have over 45 samples...oops. Atleast I don't have the problem when I JUST borrowered books from the library where for some reason I couldn't find anything that caught my fancy...but that would happen at least once a month...and I go to my local libraries A LOT.
I tend to go buy books in chunks. Most of them turn out to be series so I end up with the entire series or up until the latest book price drops from $12.99/14.99.
Right now I am eyeing the Alex Kava's "Maggie O'Dell" series bundle... But I have experienced a lot of times the books I wanted went madly up in price or disappears. So that is always on the back of my mind.
