I'm coming a little late to the party, but having a great time!  Finally got to start this last night and finished the sample.  Bought it today off the board.

I am really enjoying the discussion here, but don't know that I'll post often.  I am reading the book and these threads avidly, but found out in the Outlander and Whisky Rebels Klubs I am just not that insightful!  Everyone else's answers seem so much more thoughtful!  (And the thought of the AUTHOR reading my thoughts...shudder in embarrassment! Embarrassed)

So thank you Mike, I am really enjoying the book, and everyone else, I like your insights. I find I get so much more out of the book reading your thoughts.

Theresa, great to "see" ya! Don't worry about being insightful or whatever, just pop in and let everybody know where you are and what you think. I can't claim any great insights, either - Jan has to write the questions! LOL! I just really love seeing someone enjoy reading it. That's the only thing that truly matters. Grin

Theresa, the important thing is that you are enjoying the books and the discussion.  I hope you're reading the comments in Outlander.  Things are coming up I never thought of in all my readings of the book.  I know it's adding to my enjoyment of the book, and I'm sure it will add to yours.

Chapters 21-25 are pivotal, and so much happens.  We're reading Part 5 this week, then sprinting on to the finish.

So go to it or it's the potty hat for you.

yea, I made it to chpt 7. Will be finished with 10 tonight so I'm caught up for next week!!!

Chapter 4:

Would you have left Reza to check the library as Mary the librarian did? What would you have done? Why do you think the author did it this way? I wouldn't have left Reza to check the library unless there was no adult downstairs with the other kids.  I think it was done this way so that Reza would be seen by the priestess and saved.

We again meet again the warrior priestess who appeared in chapter 1, and find out she is named Tesh-Dar. Were you surprised to see her again? Nope, assumped she would be a big part of the story.

It comes to Tesh-Dar's thoughts several times that humans have no souls because their blood doesn't sing. What do you think this means?  I'm thinking in something in there makeup allows them to hear each other. They assume because they can not hear anything from humans and make a bad assumption. Their physiology is different...ok i'm just coming up with stuff off the top of my head.

Chapter 5:

What is your first impression of Esah-Zhurah? She doesn't see him as anything more than an animal she's been tasked to house break. She seemed a little bit indifferent to him and his need.

When Reza realized he was getting sick from his diet and attacked Esah-Zhurah, what were you thinking would happen? That she would give him what he needs. He bested her and she made a deal and her opinion of him went up a bit. I think he surprised her.

I guess I had better get these questions answered, eh? Wink

Chapter 1:

Why do you think the author put in the moment of Solon finding the picture of the couple who used to live in the house they were using as a base?
To show the stark contrast between what was and the present reality.

Near location 299-305, the Kreelan priestess has the thought "What a pity that animals with such instincts did not possess souls." What significance, if any, do you think that statement has?
That the Kreelans must put an emphasis on spiritual matters. That having a soul is an important thing to the Kreelans. To show just how little the Kreelans thought of humans.

Why did the Kreelan priestess cut Reza in the same way he cut her? Why did she take a lock of his hair? Why did she let him live?
Just to mark him in the same way.
As a token of their meeting.
Because the book would have ended right there if she had killed him. Grin But also as a sign of respect for his courage, that he had proved a worthy adversary, especially considering how powerful she really is compared to this small boy.

Chapter 2:

What insight into the author does Reza's remarks about the House 48 library give you?
That he's a lover of reading and learning.

What were your impressions of Nicole? Of Wiley?
She's very young and has been very protected so far in her life. She is handling the tragic changes in her life very well, considering.
I really like Wiley. He's a good, honorable soldier, who does what he can to make life better for these kids.

Chapter 3:

Were you surprised at what happened to Muldoon?
No. In good stories the bad guys always eventually get their paybacks. Grin

Chapter 4:

Would you have left Reza to check the library as Mary the librarian did? What would you have done? Why do you think the author did it this way?
No, I would have had Reza take the kids to the shelter. But obviously Mike had to write it this way in order to get Reza where he wanted him to be.

We again meet again the warrior priestess who appeared in chapter 1, and find out she is named Tesh-Dar. Were you surprised to see her again?
Nope, not really.

It comes to Tesh-Dar's thoughts several times that humans have no souls because their blood doesn't sing. What do you think this means?
Again the emphasis on souls and spiritual matters. The Kreelan blood must sing in some way, though we don't understand what that means at this point.

Chapter 5:

What is your first impression of Esah-Zhurah?
A strong warrior, but still young. She doesn't like the assignment she's been given, but will do what she  must.

When Reza realized he was getting sick from his diet and attacked Esah-Zhurah, what were you thinking would happen?
That he was going to get whipped within an inch of his life!
No, again, that he would have to come out on top (no pun intended! Wink) in order for the story to proceed. He had to start earning her respect in some way.

Bonus questions

A couple of questions that'll be the same for each section:

- What was the most emotional scene for you?
When Reza was young and left alone and crying when his parents were killed.

- What character(s) did you like the most and least?
Most - Wiley
Least - DUH, Muldoon! Wink

Do you think that her taking a lock of Reza's hair is connected to Reza cutting off the hair of the woman who attacked Esah-Zurah?

Yeah, I just figured out that it's not just a "potty hat," but that it's an entire freakin' bathroom! No wonder she needs an extra hand to hold it up! LOL!

I had to look at it closely myself before I saw it was a bathroom.  But it is blue and I thought it might go well with Tesh Dar's skin tone.   Wink

I was up till 2am reading this darn book last night!

I don't even know where I am. That is definitely one downside of the Kindle for book clubs, its really hard to know what Chapter you are in....

Well, that's true, although I have to say that unless it was marked on the head of a paperback page I wouldn't be able to tell anybody what chapter I was in with a paperback book. But it's easier in that case to flip back to where the chapter is; can't do that very easily with a Kindle. Alas, one of it's few disadvantages!  Wink
