So I'm at a cafe, and I want to read. The thing is when I read this morning I didn't notice the battery draining. It is slightly below 50.  Can I keep reading for an hour? How low can the battery go? When do you charge?

If it's just below 50% you will have no problem reading for an hour.  In fact the battery should last several more days.

You've had a kindle since February and have never gotten below 50 percent?

Of course you can read for an hour. It should last for a few more days of heavy reading.

And if you couldn't, what's the big deal? Read until it dies.

Kindle batteries are supposed to be at their optimum when charged between 20% and 80%, so leave it till you've only got 20% left and then charge it. Unless you know you're going to be away from home or otherwise without the ability to charge for some time, there's no need to to keep topping it up. Without the wireless switched on, and with no books indexing, you can read for about ten days to two weeks on average on one charge.
