According to one researcher, the Kindle is better for the environment than paper books:

More or less what we suspected all along.

Apple's iPad generates 130 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents during its lifetime, according to company estimates. Amazon has not released numbers for the Kindle, but Cleantech and other analysts put it at 168 kilograms.

I know I'm not the cleverest guy on the block, but what does this mean actually?  Are they saying that a device that needs charging up every 10 hours is somehow better for the environment than one that needs charging just once per month?  How does that work?

Yeah, I'm not sure I really agree that the iPad "pays itself off" sooner than the Kindle.
