Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Sem, I stayed up late tonight just to finish "The Book"! I really enjoyed it and really got sucked into the story and characters! Still cant believe I got it for only $2.  When I read the synopsis of it I immediately though of "The Book of Eli", but "The Book" ended up being so much more enjoyable and satisfying.

So far you guys are doing an amazing job picking for me. I have only played this game 2 months and you guys have already recommended 2 great books!

Okay, FINALLY at the 50% mark of The Distance Between Us. It's actually stressing me out...the book's getting depressing, and my heart feels sad. Even comedic scenes are poignant and heavy, which is appropriate to where the plot is, but it still means that I need to take breaks to keep my mood from falling too low.

oh, yeah, sorry.  It's a pretty intense book ... and it keeps that level throughout the book - but it's completely worth it.

I finished! It made me laugh, cry, and rip my hair out at the same time. (Well, what's left of it - I just donated three quarters of a foot, so that makes the motion much less effective.) I was completely floored by the author's ability to develop his characters without losing their essence, and the witticisms and plot twists were brilliant! I wrote a review that will post to my blog on Friday, but it's safe to say that I loved it.

Now, off to find some hot tea to help me get over the post-weeping sniffles.

I think this thread will be locked before I get to it. Maybe Geoffrey would consider adding me to the October game and assign me this book.

Hi Drenfrow,

I apologize for getting back to you late on my review of Sweetness, but with vacationing in Europe I've been distracted by a lot of big monuments. The good news is that I was able to finish the book a few days ago and, though it was well written and I really like Flavia, I felt it was a little slow for me. It felt as though it took too long to get to the climax. I really did love the interaction between her and her sisters, though it was sad to see such an emotional distance between her and her father.

Thanks for the recommendation though!

I finally finished The Gargoyle. It was slow at first, but at about 75% I was hooked and couldn't put it down.

Overall I liked it. I don't know that I ever really liked the main character (did we ever learn his name?), but at least I didn't hate him. I liked Marianne Engel, and some of the doctors. There were a lot of short stories in this book that ended up getting tied together towards the end, sort of. I think my favorite story of all was the story of Marianne and the guy back in the 1300's. It was reminiscent of Pillars of the Earth, at least for me.

Now I have to go read InfernoWink
