Amazon obviously used Oprah to sell out Kindle1 prior to introducing Kindle2. They certainly knew the 2 was on its way. By introducing Kindle 2 on Oprah just 3 months later, Amazon might well have been stuck with excess 1's. But then they could have cut the price of the 1 and sold them. Oh well, I like my 1, and much of what I've read of the 2 doesn't cause me to spend another $359. If those of you who will soon have both think that there is a vast improvement in 2 over 1, I'd love to hear from you.

P.S. I tried to eliminate all the grievous grammar errors discussed in another topic!

In one of the on line reviews for the K2 I read, they said the Oprah rep at the announcement was late and they didn't want to let them in. That would have been ugly.

Firstly, from everything I've heard, Oprah was paid for her endorsement of the Kindle.
Secondly, I bet if she snaps her fingers, Amazon.com will give her a 2.0 just as fast as they gave one to Stephen King.
I doubt she feels "used" in any way from this.

Bugger if I can't remember where. My short term memory is incredibly bad. But I heard/read it in multiple places, just can't place where. Sorry.

I seriously don't think they needed Oprah to move their K1 inventory. They were so over subscribed relative to the supply I think they would have few if any K1s left if their was no Oprah endorsement. I also think that Oprah has probably spent less than one millionth of a nanosecond worrying about this.

Yes, but will it be pink? For Oprah they'd probably make it glow-in-the-dark if that's what she wanted.

And wouldn't that be cool? I wonder if the glow-in-the-dark would be bright enough to read by?

In addition to my comments, I wanted to say that if Oprah is really a big Kindler like us, she was probably more than happy to talk about it. I know that I whip mine out at every possible opportunity to show people.

Oprah is a very smart woman. No way she would risk her reputation by taking money for that endorsement.

According to Oprah, a friend gave her the Kindle as a gift and she feel in love with it. I have not heard that she is paid for her endorsements before and would be surprised if she was paid for this endorsement. If anything, the decision to endorse the Kindle probably screwed up Amazon's release of K2. They ended up with a larger backlog then they were expecting.

Oprah's coupon is what drove this particular Kindle user to buy one. The coupon could have come from Bill O'Reilly and I would've still ordered.

Whether you like Oprah or not she is a very intelligent woman and has worked hard for what she has in life. I don't think anyone uses Oprah.
She has always been an avid reader and has promoted reading for as long as I can remember on her show and in her magazine. Faith Hill has a charity to help the illiterate learn to read because her Dad couldn't read and Oprah has donated money to that charity.
I think Oprah's comment and endorsement of the Kindle was genuine, no way she took money for that.

I do think that Oprah has helped sell a lot of books and she's probably motivated many people to start reading - or read more. I also believe that she influenced a lot of Kindle purchases. The kindle had been in stock for months prior to being featured on her show and shortly after that it went out of stock. I was lucky enough to buy one for my wife using the Oprah discount.

Highly possible that what I read was unreliable. Hence why I said "from everything I've heard" not "it's absolutely true that..."
Seems strange to me that she would do an entire show on something without some sort of compensation, but that's just me though. I don't watch Oprah so I don't know how she works.

I do watch Oprah, and this isn't the first time she has "endorsed" something. She has her "10 Favorite Things" specials every year (except for this year because of the economic crisis) and I know for a fact that she speaks JUST as passionately about all her favorite things. I doubt Oprah was "used" in any way, she just shared something she loved and millions of people who didn't know about the Kindle suddenly found out about it.
Oprah needs Amazon's money like the desert needs sand.

I don't think she got anything out of it except I'll bet that she didn't pay for all the Kindles she gave her audience and she didn't pay for the $50 off that everyone got from her web site. I'm sure she will get a K2 from Amazon too. Amazon was thrilled to get the bounce from her endorsement. Let's see how long before she promotes the K2.

Oprah is a billionaire. She loves to read (as we all do). She does shows on her favorite products and of course, as we all know, Kindle is a great product for people who love to read. She did the same advertising on her show, that all of us do "out in the wild". I haven't received mine yet, but when I do, I will be demoing it to about 30 people here at work. They are all excited to see it!
I do not believe for a second that she was paid a cent for talking about Kindle. We can all understand why she loved the product. I bet that Amazon donated all the kindles given away on the show, and of course, absorbed the $50 discount.
Its too bad that Amazon didn't extend the discount... the last "orderers" of K1 that actually received a K1 didn't all get the $50 discount... anyone who ordered between Nov. 1st when the discount expired and late November when the Kindle went out of stock should have gotten the $50 discount (thus reducing the first generation product by $50 in the months before the second generation was released). Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

No way, Oprah doesn't feel used regarding the Kindle. And if she did, she would have a show about it, and her followers would shun the Kindle... She holds great power, but she tends to use it gently. And this is a great concession, coming from me, because I do not like Oprah one tiny bit. Her followers tend to be rabid in their glory of her and she loves and encourages that adulation. Instinctively that scares me. She is very rich and has no need for payment from Amazon or a free Kindle...

Betcha anything Jeff Bezos made sure Oprah has at least 100 k2s. It is the least he could do considering what Oprah did for Amazon free gratis. I had never heard of Amazon Kindle prior to Oprah's show airing in October. I do not watch Oprah regularly nor am I concerned if she made Amazon pay her to plug their product. I am immensely grateful for actually having seen the show. That and that alone is the reason I purchased my beloved Kindle. Kindle is the best gift I have ever given myself.
Having said that I doubt very much that anyone could pay her money to tell her loyal audience that Kindle is one of her favorite gadgets. Find it impossible to believe that Oprah is that sort of person. I would, however, love to know which friend gave her a Kindle.

Kindle... the gift that keeps on giving! I agree with you 100% the best gift I ever gave myself too. Oprah is passionate about anything she endorses, her favorite things is an example. You can be assured anything she endorses she has one or more of it/them and has put it to the test. I have purchased 2 or 3 of her favorite things over the years and loved them.
