It's not just books. When we moved to this town 6 years ago, my kids tried to start a D&D club after school because there wasn't one here.. we found out why... There are some things you do not DO in this portion of the Bible Belt because ALOT of the grandmas who are living with/raising the kids threw a MASSIVE hissy fit calling it the devil's game.
So for about 2 years, we quietly had it in our home with just a couple of other kids.

Yes, I've heard of these cases. Seems to be the same crowd that objects to Harry Potter. Anything with magic is a no no....

If you wrote a novel about okra, you can bet your britches that someone, somewhere will be offended! I'm offended by this picture. First you show the orca in a small box, which obviously symbolizes captivity. The little mountain in the background does not fool me. Orca are proud, majestic creatures; they should not live in a BOX. And the okra is even worse. The okra is a traditional vegetable in Creole cuisine; presenting it in a silly drawing is insulting, especially as we struggle to rebuild the proud city of New Orleans. I will not be reading this book.

Have you ever accidentally offended readers?
So what do you think? Has this ever happened to you? I
Oh yes, accidentally/unintentionally offended people with my writing a few times that I know of. The way I look at it is that it's still a strong emotional response to my work so therefore is a good thing and not a reflection on my writing at all. It's just that my story is not for that person.

I must be sheltered up here, because that shocked me. And I don't shock easily.

I haven't seen Free Willy, but there's a Marineland near me (basically the Canadian Seaworld), and I won't go there. I imagine that I'd feel too bad for the orca. I reckon zoos are one thing, but when you make your animals do tricks all day, I dunno... seems iffy to me.

We have a similar thing Down Under, Sea World, and recently they had some cheerleader or something riding the orca for publicity.... only she gets bitten, nearly loses her leg, Sea World's desperately trying to regain some credibility and I couldn't help myself. LMAO. You should not abuse animals for the fun of it, they might bite back. I mean I felt bad for the girl but seriously, bound to happen - wild animals are wild animals

I'm already late for work (Doh! *shakes fist at KB) or I'd dig it up, but I remember a quote by a librarian that went, "If we don't have at least one book that you find offensive, please complain immediately."

Omigosh, what have I wrought? I promise you dear readers that no orcas or okras were harmed in the rendering of this cartoon or in the book, Falling Star. O.K., O.K., some okra may have inadvertently slipped into a delicious gumbo eaten by one of the characters in Falling Star, but I assure you that the okra was treated with respect and any mention of okra, if any, was not done graphically or even metaphorically in such a way as to portray that okra's sacrifice in an undignified manner. Thank you Phil p.s., I am so sorry that you were offended.

Another serious Writers' Cafe thread descends into silliness... And it only took three pages to do so.

Okra. Gross. I grew up in the south and I can't stand the stuff. Right up there with brussel sprouts.

Three pages is pretty good...usually it only takes one.

wow - properly fried okra is one of life's greatest joys - right up there with offending little old ladies. The correct amount of batter, pepper and having the oil at just the right temperature.
Yummmm....now wonder I'm fat.
Properly fried orca, now, that one I've never tried. Bet it tastes like chicken.
