I am buying my daughter the wifi Kindle 3 and intend to get a Wifi/3g one for myself and OH to share. Just wondering if there is any way to share books that we buy between the knidles so we don't have 2 buy more than one copy when its something we all want to read?  Has anybody in a multi kindle family like this?

Welcome tabs!

You may register an unlimited number of devices to the same Amazon account.

Most books have a 'device' limit of 6.  This means that the book can only be on, at most, 6 devices at a time.  But once you take it off one, that 'license' is restored.  Note that the limit for some books is lower than 6, and for some it is unlimited.

Periodicals can only go to 1 device. . . .so if you want to read the Washington Post on two different Kindles every morning, you'll need two subscriptions.

So Two Kindles won't be a problem for Amazon or sharing books.  It might be a problem 'cause it seems there are 3 of you!  Many of us have found that sharing 1 Kindle between 2 people just doesn't work as an ongoing practice. . . . .if you both decide you really like the Kindle, you'll probably realize you each need your own! Yes. . .the various Kindle Apps -- for PC, Mac, iPod, iPad, Blackberry, and Android. . .each would count as a device.

One thing to be careful of:  by default, Amazon allows syncing of devices so that, for instance, you can read on your Kindle and if you find yourself without it but have your Droid, you can pull it up on that app and go on from where you left off.  BUT since you will have more than one person sharing the account, you'll need to disable syncing if you're reading the same book at the same time. . .otherwise it'll keep trying to put you always both on the same page.  The option is either ON or OFF and can be changed through "Manage Your Kindle". . . all the way a the bottom of the page is a link to info about syncing and the toggle. . . .

I would prepare to buy 1 more. Sharing 1 Kindle could be dangerous. Once you get it in your hands, it will have to be pried out. Grin

So true. I'm thinking about letting my mom borrow my Kindle for a week, just to be sure she wants one. I may never get it back! Cheesy

What Ann said... sharing an account works beautifully. We have six kindles ( and 2 apps) on my account with 4 more arriving this month. It's been just fine. People just buy gift cards now and then and keep a mental tally of what they owe to my account. I don't keep a running tab, it's up to them. We're all family/close so it's not a huge deal and everyone's always kept up their end. If they don't, it's easily enough for me to boot 'em. It's also a good way to make your family be nice to you. If they make me mad, they know I get to keep all the books. Neener Wink Kidding. It is great though because I've read stuff I wouldn't have otherwise this way.

<gasp> Share a Kindle....  You're kidding right?  That just won't do. Everyone needs their own! LOL!

I agree about the sharing an account though. It works like a charm. There are currently 4 of us on my account and I'm getting ready to add 2 more (all family or close friends) The cost of books isn't so much when there are 6 of us kicking in. We all like many of the same books.
