Sorry I have a headache and with a headache I have a hard time reading fine legal text. ><'. I see you can purchase 2 years of warranty with a Kindle 2; does anyone know if there is any minimal warranty included in the original price?

You get one year with the unit. The extended adds 1 additional year for 2 years total warranty. The extended also gives you one freebie oops, i.e. warranty for accidental damage.

I would love to hear from others, especially those who own a K1, what they think of these warranties as compared to the K1 warranty.  K1 didn't come with an extended warranty, did it?  Then again, the battery was replaceable, correct?  I usually don't go for extended warranties, but this one seems like it might give me peace of mind.  Would love to hear from others on this.

Get the square trade warranty, It lasts 3 years, and for a minimum fee you can add accidents to it, and then the decuctible is only 50 dollars.

For SquareTrade ; how exactly does it work with Kindle? Do they have an agreement with Amazon?

Also does anyone know if 'THIRTY30' is still valid for SquareTrade and can be used toward a Kindle Warranty?

I dont have it yet myself, still waiting on my kindle. I believe its a totally seperate company. Its kinda like car insurance from what I understand.

You can only get an extended warranty within a certain number of days of purchase.  And it won't extend the coverage, ie., the clock starts when you purchased the item, not the warranty.  There's no point in waiting, unless you don't have the money now.

Also, just as an additional info: some credit cards offer warranty extension for free. I get an additional one year warranty with my Visa Signature if I pay the full purchase price with the card (which I did for the K2). Sure, there's no accidental damage protection, but if you don't want to purchase any extra coverage you might want to double check your credit cards options.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the K2 extended warranty in case of an accidental drop, etc., but I suppose I should wait to buy it until my K2 arrives.....just in case I don't like the Kindle

I would definitely suggest it. I dont usually buy them on things like TVs or computers because they stay put. But with things i carry around day to day, i like to have the peace of mind.

Thanks, KindleKid.  I agree with you.  I'm not much on extended warranties, but this one is inexpensive enough and provides very good protection for such an often-used device.  I wish we didn't have to pay for it at all, though, after the budget-busting of buying K2, cover, etc.  Like you said, at least it's worth the peace of mind.

Thanks for the point in that direction!  I've heard of Square Trade (haven't heard of the Amazon extended warranty company), but I don't know of Square Trade's reputation for service.  Can anyone attest to it?

I know there are others on the boards that have used them in the past and have been happy with them (I can't remember who though) This will be the first time I've used them. If I had known about them when I bought my first Kindle I would have (I have 4 kids. Accidental Damage Coverage is a MUST in this household...It usually covers drops in toilets..yes, that's happened to 2 cell phones and a Gameboy)

FYI, you can cancel your warranty with Square Trade within 60 days and get your money back if you decide not to keep the Kindle or decide against the warranty.

It expires 2/14. I did go ahead and purchase it now so that I could use the coupon. I have not sent in anything yet. I won't send anything in until I have my receipt.

They do have a 60 day cancellation policy if you decide you don't want it (or if you return the kindle)

I just bought the 3 year with ADH and the coupon still works, it was almost $80 & dropped to $ 44 and some cents. Good deal. I had it on my Klassic also.

You really don't need to buy any extended warranties. Check with your credit card company.
Both the credit cards I use (Citibank and AmEx) both extend warranties for the same length for no additional charge if you use them to purchase a product. ("The Extended Warranty will extend the terms of the original U.S. manufacturer's warranty for up to one additional year on eligible purchases with warranties of 5 years or less, when the purchase is charged to the Card.") That means, you will get 2 years coverage for the Kindle, including the battery replacement. No need to buy the extended warranty offered by Amazon. Contact your credit card company to be sure the card you have does this. Both of these credit cards also cover Protection within first 90 days: "Protects most purchases made on these cards against theft, fire or accidental breakage up to $500, for up to 90 days from the date of purchase." Amazon's extended warranty only covers one accidental damage in the 2 years. Square Trade has a $50 deductible on its accidental damage coverage (which essentially adds $50 to the cost of their Accidental damage coverage which costs already $25 more than their basic $50 coverage. IN other words, Square Trade will cost you $125 for the same thing as Amazon's $65. But the credit card company ones a free, without the accidental damage coverage (which is included only in the first 90 days on my two credit cards.)

I got the amazon extended warranty with mine.  With my luck, I'll end up breaking the Kindle a week after the 2 years warranty is done.

If your credit card gets bought out or your bank changes they can discontinue the extended warranty at any time.  I had that happen, the credit card got bought out by a new company and the "warranty extension" went away.  So I don't count on those for long term protection anymore.  With the banks the way they are now who knows what will happen.  I bought the Square Trade one.

With all the financial meltdowns, I wouldn't doubt that the banks would take away anything where they would have to pay out $$.

With the coupon for Square trade, the cost of the AD coverage is free plus $5 off the extended warranty.  I don't think I would have signed up for this without a coupon though.

Good point.  So if the warranty is $45 with the coupon plus the $50 deductible (if you need to use the AD coverage), it would be $95 or about $31.67/year for 3 years of coverage.  The Amazon warranty is $65 or $32.50/year for 2 years of coverage.  But if you didn't need to use the AD coverage on the square trade warranty, it would work out to be $15/year for 3 years of coverage.

I'd love the idea of a 3-year warranty, but since I've never dealt with Square Trade before, I think I'll stick with Amazon's warranty because it's specifically for the Kindle.  I'm sure the other warranties work very well, but I'm not familiar with them.

n these 3rd party guarantee situations, how do they fix a problem. There are no service centers for the Kindle. Do they automatically give you a K2 if you have a problem. They wouldn't have the parts to fix it themselves, even if they knew how. Are their warranties for the Kindle really worth anything?

My guess is you'd send them the non-functioning device and they'd send you the money.  Then you go buy a new one.

But I don't really know. . . .

And be sure to call your credit card company since the two I use (AmEx Hilton and Citi American Airlines MasterCard) both automatically extend your warranty one full year when using their card. Accidental damage is covered, however, only for the first 90 days.
