He was completely devastated last night after a week of travelling when he reached into his "man bag" to retrieve his K2i.... despite my many warnings, he had placed in the seat back pocket on the plane, and in the rush to get off the plane, did not remember to grab it!!!! He spent all night muttering "I can't believe I did that! I should have listened to my wife! I don't deserve to have a Kindle..." It was very traumatic and dramatic...
We immediately called the airline and the airport lost and found (we were told that's where the airline will take it if they find it).... He travels quite often, and I thought I had pretty much drilled it into his head to NEVER put the Kindle in the seat pocket- that's how people lose their Kindles!!! I have also told him numerous times to add his business card into the front of his cover, so someone can easily find him in the event that he DID lose the Kindle.... Alas, he never "got around" to adding the business card, and he did leave the Kindle in the seat pocket!!!
I did update the Kindle itself with his name, email address and phone number, but... I deregistered the device so that no one can "one-click" and purchase books on my account- and I called Amazon KCS to see if there was anything else I should do- talked to a VERY nice and very sympathetic woman about the situation- she said that she was going to basically "brick" (that wasn't her word- but I forget what she actually said) the Kindle so that it would not fuction at all for anyone who might try to use it- so they wouldn't be able to access the contact information on the device... she told me if anyone finds it and calls Amazon (trying to find the owner) that they would send the person a pre-paid shipping label to send it to them- they would then send the Kindle to Amazon, who would send it back to me.
While talking to her, I decided to buy the hubby a K3 (Wifi only) since I think the chances of getting the K2i back are fairly slim... I told the rep that I was doing that and she offered to waive the shipping charges for me! Outstanding service!!!!
Worse case scenario, we get the K2i back and either have a "spare" or I can pass one on to my sister or my mom...

Since I have a K2i, I briefly thought about giving the hubby my "old" one and taking the new K3 for myself... but then I thought about how much I love my DG skin and platimum Noreve cover and ordering books through the 3G while lounging at a beach and decided that he gets the K3.... BUT- he has to buy his own cover and it WILL NOT be leaving this house until he at least adds his business card in case he loses it again!
I totally understand losing objects- I have been known to lose a few myself, so I am trying really hard not to be mad at him- it's a $139 lesson that I think he has learned, AND it would have been way more stressful if he lost his wallet and we had to cancel all of his cards and stuff....

I certainly hope you will be pleasantly surprised and get the Kindle back. Once in a while I have gotten lucky and got back a lost item that I was sure I would never see again.
I wish I were brave enough to change the screensavers in my Kindle because then I could put my i.d. on it as a little extra assurance it might be returned if lost -- especially if it contained a blurb about how it would be immediately locked down. (Or would screensavers be locked out also?)

Here's a thread from the Writer's Cafe where a guy left his Kindle on the roof of his car, forgot it there, it fell off while they were driving and was run over and crushed. And Amazon replaced it. Not sure if that would work with one completely missing, but it's worth a try. Bad news on the review front

I'm still so traumatized for you & your husband about this. I feel like you lost a beloved family member, LOL. I'm sure he feels worse than you can make him feel about it, so don't be too mad. Silver lining: what a good reminder to the rest of us to put our business cards (or sheet of paper w/contact info) in our covers!! Still crossing fingers & toes that you get it back!!

I feel so bad for both you and your DH. Please accept my sympathies on the loss of your DH's Kindle. It pains me to see the way DH treats his Kindle. DH, who inherited my K2 (which was in mint condition after 13 months ownership) when I got a K3, puts his Kindle down anywhere and just walks away. He has left in on a seat a church; at our store both under the counter, on his desk, and on a shelf next to merchandise; thrown on the bed; tossed on the futon in the game room (where the dog ended up sleeping on it), in the back seat of the car and jammed down between the front seat console and the seat. He also sits it right next to his huge cups of hot tea or other cold drinks on his desk or the table. He doesn't take care of it all and doesn't seem to care where he leaves it. DH treats it his K2 like it was a cheap paperback he doesn't care about loosing. It drives me crazy. I know if he took a plane he'd leave it. He is always asking me where HIS Kindle is!! I mean it's HIS KINDLE how should I know where he left it!! On the other hand I'm super careful with my K3, as I was with my K2. There are only two places I sit mine down in the house, the dresser or the living room table. At the store when I'm not reading it, it is in a drawer away from the fingers of customers or in my purse. I never put any liquid within 5 feet of my beloved Libri. It is well dressed in a Coral Peacock skin, a red Amazon cover and a red and white custom sleeve by Elite Elishi. I do this to protect it from scratches or any other damage. I also have contact info inside the cover on the off chance I (sob, sob. sob) lost it. DS says I treat my K3 like a "precious artifact." I know there is a happy medium between DH's carelessness and my over protectiveness but personally since it's an expensive (for me) electronic device and contains my beloved library I'd rather err on the side of protectiveness.

Thanks for the "sympathy traumatization", Cargalmn!! I know he feels terrible about it, so I am trying not to add to his guilty feelings and harp on it.... Stuff happens to everyone, right? Since it was TOTALLY my husband's fault, I would NOT expect Amazon to send him a new Kindle for free!! I was totally thrilled and impressed with their offer to waive the shipping charges- that is MORE than enough to me!

That is ingenious. If I leave my K2 on the plane and retch in humble agony then I get a K3. Better be G3 though. I read to my wife driving down the freeway and questions come up that require immediate wikipedia and google.

I forgot to mention that my sweet trusting wife used the little loop that my Kindle case had for a pen and sewed a strap from the bottom of an old pair of jeans so now I never drop or misplace my Kindle. It is practically part of me. The strap is just the right size so I can read and wear my Kindle at the same time. She calls my Kindle my concubine

Oh I so feel for you and your hubby in this! I recently got back from +12 of flying (both ways) and couldn't imagine being without my Kindle! I placed it on the pocket infront too but then I immediately stopped myself remembering that this was the exact place nearly everyone lost their Kindles. So I either placed it back in my bag underneath the seat (annoying it maybe, nut atleast I can't lose it) or have it on my lap...especially if I am earring a quick snack or meal. Even leaving it in my hotel/B&B room or in my bag on the coach during our quick jaunts made me nervous! I would just completely kick myself to lose it.

Well, that's how we learn, isn't it? At least it's a Kindle and not a baby.
(Sorry if I seem unsympathetic...I know how I'd berate myself for doing something dumb like that. But it's a thing, and you can get another one. I was taught: "It isn't worth it to love something that can't love you back.")

Congratulations on the new Kindle for your hubby. What a sweet thing to do.
You might still get your K2 back. My sister left hers in a rental car and it was not returned for over a month. When she got it back, someone's drivers license was in the cover.
Good luck with the K3 and getting your K2 back.

I'm so sorry this happened I know how devastating it is to lose something important. Last month I nearly lost my own Kindle, I had it in my bag and stupidly left the bag on a bench (didn't realize it wasn't on my shoulder when I got up since I was carrying a few things and was distracted) and when I realized a few minutes later it was gone. Luckily it was found by a policeman so I got it back. Hopefully your husband's Kindle was found by someone who will return it to him. I hate those airline seat backs too, I'll never put anything in them besides a bottle of water or a newspaper.

Im usually pretty prone to leaving things laying around, i've lost countless books/phones/PDAs, and even a laptop... but so far, i've been quite vigilent with my K3
