Late last week Amazon sent me a new Kindle 2 to replace my old one as it seems to have developed a problem related to Text-to-Speech. It would periodically skip ahead several pages seemingly at random. If I returned to the offending location, Text-to-Speech would read over it correctly.
I did several Internet searches and haven't seen any postings on this particular behavior, so I'm hoping mine was indeed a defective unit. I haven't had the opportunity to try the new one yet, but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

I had a weird problem with text to speech where it would only say one syllable...Chap, for Chapter one. Amazon CS had me download the newest version (3.3) and that corrected it.

. . . the newest version (3.3) . . . .
Clarification so no one is confused. The current firmware version is 3.0.2 with 3.0.3 available on Amazon in early pre-release. . . .many have said it has fixed glitches they've had. . . . .

I do have this problem with my Kindle 2. It happens every fifty pages or so that TTS skips up about 10-20 pages. It's mildly annoying, but I would never consider giving up my Kindle long enough to try to get it fixed. In the case of my generation of Kindle, the TTS function is marked "experimental," which I took to mean "no warranties as to performance" and so it never occured to me it could be a fault in my individual device.

I'm an author of three books for Kindle. One is called School of the Ages: The Ghost in the Crystal. It's a young adult novel about a magic school in New York City. It is very well-reviewed and also available in paperback and through Barnes & Noble. The second is the sequel, published in September 2011, called School of the Ages: Level Three's Dream, which brings my teen magicians into Alice in Wonderland World. The third is called Vampire Poet. It features poetry and black and white photography and only people in the UK ever buy it. If you want more information, message me or search for me in the Kindle Store. Thanks.

That sounds very similar to the problem mine was giving me. I called Amazon support, and after going thru resetting the unit back to defaults, it was still doing it, so they offered to replace it. There was no fighting with regards to this being an experimental feature or not, they just went through the usual diagnostics, then replaced it. I should get some time with it today to see if the new one's doing the same thing or not.

I discussed this problem on here about a month ago. It started happening for me when I upgraded to the latest K2 major release. Called CS and they did offer to replace it (for a fee), but it surprised me that the replacing it would infer hardware issue and not software, which I would guess could be easily fixed.

The only problem I've ever had with TTS is that not every book has it!

Well, as I suspected, the issue does not appear to be hardware related. The new K2 I received in replacement for my previous one is exhibiting the same issue. I guess I'll call support again, but I'm not optimistic for a quick fix.

I would have assumed that they would have had me reinstall 2.5, but CS never did offer that as a fix. They did have me do a soft reset, which didn't correct the problem. I can't imagine what type of hardware issue would cause a software glitch...

Well, the Kindle Support Rep opened a trouble ticket with engineering. I'll wait and see if anything comes of it. Given that it's not the current model, I don't have my hopes too high. But who knows, maybe they'll surprise me.

Thanks for the link to the Amazon forum. I was unable to locate that myself. Interesting to note that it's affecting K3s too. And if I hear anything back from Amazon, I'll definitely post it here.

I have noticed this problem lately on my K2 when I have it read for long periods of time. Occasionally it skips 7 or 8 pages (~70 locations) but if I go back then it reads OK.

I had a problem with text to speech, I had my Kindle plugged into my car stereo, and even with the stereo on full volume, I couldn't hear it when the car was running. Then I noticed there was a volume control on the Kindle. (I've only had it a week)
I've only tried Text to Speech with free books, and I have found the pauses to be peculiar. It doesn't pause enough when there is a period, and pauses too much when there is a comma, which makes things flow very oddly.

Xianfox...yes please keep us posted. Mine was doing this quite frequently and was very annoying! I would be walking the dog and listening and then all of a sudden I'd be thinking what this makes no sense as it jumped way far ahead. It has not done it though for the last couple of books I have read so perhaps I did something to correct it without realizing it!
