I just took a look on eBay to see what prices people were selling Kindles for and the bidding for a new Kindle 3 with wifi only was at $142.50 (+$15 shipping) with a day to go; a couple of minutes ago, another one just sold for $162, plus $15 shipping.  Amazon is, of course, selling new ones for $139 with free shipping in the U.S., and you can order them for international delivery at a reasonable shipping charge.  I also saw some of the storefront sellers on Amazon selling used models for $187-$220, and that didn't include shipping.  What am I not getting here? Are these buyers people who are outside the U.S. and are having trouble getting a Kindle, or what?

The same thing happened with other versions of Kindle.  If I recall the answers given then it is as you suspect, folks from other countries where Kindle is not currently available perhaps.

I dunno, I saw HSN or QVC selling a K2, AFTER the K3s had come out, for like $250 or something insane. And I'm sure some people bought it.

The phrase "There's a sucker born every minute" comes to mind. . . .

I've been asked by several people about buying Kindles:  I always tell them that, in my opinion, the best way to buy it is directly from Amazon.

I wonder if some people bidding don't know the difference between the wi-fi only and the 3G model.

Also, not sure if they come with a cover - keep in mind the cover costs $30 (more for the lighted one) so maybe that's what people are paying for.

My DX is coming today from Amazon.  A Microsoft Store opened near me very recently.  They sell wifi only K3s and DXs.  Price is the same as through Amazon, but if I bought there = sales tax.  It's 7% - 8%.  No, thank you.
