My amazing wife and I were at Best Buy today and they had all of their e-readers on display. From Sony to both nooks to both Kindles and even the one from Sharper Image, they were all out and working. I'll have to say, the K3 is very stylish and there is a very noticeable difference in the screen. However, more-so than the screen, the size difference is what really jumped out at me. The thing seem tiny! Overall, it wasn't enough to make me 'have' to have it, but it seems like a very nice upgrade to keep the Kindle in front as the benchmark for e-readers.
Also, it was the first time I'd ever seen a DX. Again, probably something I'd never get just because I personally don't have a need for the bigger screen, but I thought it was very cool.
The color nook seemed like a pretty neat gadget, but I don't see that, for me, it would be good for anything other than magazines. For that, I think it would be a great device.
Overall, I didn't see anything that made me want to upgrade from my K2, but it was nice that they had them all together to compare. There were lots of people looking at each one too, so I would imagine there are going to be many many happy people come Christmas Day!

Thanks for the report! I don't think I've ever seen the Sharper Image one. Was it nice? I'm not even sure what formats are compatible with it. Yes, the selection for e-readers is getting thick, but I do agree that Amazon is maintaining its position at the front of the pack.

Honestly, that one (the Literati) was my least favorite. It had a color, back-lit screen which, given the choice, I'd prefer the color nook. Plus, the keyboard just seemed really clunky. In my opinion, the kindle and nook both have it beat when it comes to overall style.

Great report. Thanks for sharing. As a brand new Kindle owner, it confirms the choice I made.

On November 6, I saw my first DX in real life. A Miscrosoft Store opened nearby -- only the 5th in the country and 1st east of the Mississippi. They sell and have hands-on demo models of K3 and DXG. On November 12 my DXG was in my hands -- from Amazon. Love and use both my K3 and DXG.

My bro beagle (1954-1966). I still miss him big time. His last collar hangs on my bedpost.

I had the same experience at Best Buy today. Lots of people looking over the e-readers. The guy working there was fairly knowledgeable, although I did have to jump in when he said the Nook's screen was the same as the Kindle's, and I explained e-Ink Pearl and pointed out how much darker the blacks were on the Kindle screen.
Got to see the Nook Color, seemed pretty good for what it is (an LCD tablet, I still wouldn't want one for serious reading). But it was fairly responsive and intuitive when I played around with it. A little bit of lag when flipping magazine pages, but ah well.
I also noticed how much I prefer the page turn buttons on the sides of the Kindle (and Nook) compared to swiping the Sony screen. For some things, buttons really are better than touchscreens, even if touchscreens seem "cooler." I was a little disappointed that the Sony quite often didn't register my page turn swipe -- and the physical page turn buttons at the bottom left are awkwardly placed.
Interestingly, they were all out of both models of K3s.
