Amazon's Kindle Popular Classics list, i.e. the free Kindle books list, reflects that 16,480 results are available. However, at page 400 of the listing (4800 total results) the last page of the list begins to repeat itself. Are 11,000+ entries really missing? As a free Kindle books enthusiast, I'm mildly disappointed. Please, someone that knows: tell me that Amazon just hasn't got around to filling those pages with additional titles. Huh  Angry

I'm still reeling at the thought of having gone through 400 pages of free book listings . . .

I think, but mind you this is only from casual observation, is that there are several versions on each title. Many there are. maybe, 50 to 100 different publishers of free Tom Sawyer books. I'm sort of confused if you are asking about free Classics available on Kindle, or just the ones published by Amazon. Truthfully, I've found a lot of format errors in the ones published by Amazon and avoid them, but that is just me.

It's similar to browsing the library stacks. Amazon lists 10 titles per page; I scan the page; that takes a few seconds at most. If something interests me, I "pull it out" and look it over; that slows me down. If I'm interested in a specific title or author, I type the letters in the search box.

I enjoy browsing; I used to do it, all the time, at the big library. Amazon is easier; they don't have very many books.   Wink

Re "50 to 100 different publishers of free Tom Sawyer books"

Thanks for your response. Mark Twain is one of my interests. When I search the Amazon.com "Kindle Popular Classics" freebie list, http://www.amazon.com/s/?node=2245146011, typing in Tom Sawyer brings up 30 results. Is there something I don't know?

Re "a lot of format errors"

I agree; lots of formatting errors on the free books I've downloaded. But, I don't mind. If the item's readability doesn't satisfy me, I toss it back (i.e., delete it from my Kindle). So far, the majority of my downloads from the "Kindle Popular Classics" freebie list have been reasonably satisfactory; they don't have to look pretty, just readable -- that's me. My "complaint," observation, really, is that, at page=400, the same 10 titles are repeated, page after page, presumably, for the next 11,000 or so titles out of "16,480."

Freebie lover, here (I feel like I'm getting away with something).   Cheesy

Amazon went through and deleted a lot of duplicates a few months ago, from what I've read on forums, glad to hear they have trimmed the numbers. I like Twain but there were pages and pages, and pages of Tom Sawyer. It was tough to sort through for quality formatting.
As far as what happens when you get to page 400, that is odd. I wonder if Amazon Kindle CS is even aware?

People talk about this all the time.  It seems to be intentional.  It is best to trim down your search results first, so that less than 400 pages are actually useful.
