"Prey" a 5800 word short story, free on SmashWords. http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/38260

Tlartox Captain Krin Tlento finds herself on the wrong side of the predator/prey relationship. Someone or something alerted the herd from which she expected to make her kill -- claw and fang against hoof and horn, just as Tlar had intended for her people. Now, the herd's bulls have almost run her into the ground. Her radio sabotaged, she has but one option: to face death with honor, as befits one of the People of Tlar, with her fangs in the throat of a barendi bull. In the unlikely event she should survive, her second priority is to retake her ship from the mutineers who left her to die. Then the unexpected occurs.

"Prey" takes place in the same universe as Ghost Fleet, now available from Amazon.

Download the sample (okay, so it's a 100% sample) and enjoy.  Send your evil minions after me if it fails to please . . . . You don't have evil minions?  I thought everyone had evil minions.  I could loan you some.  They work cheaply.

Hello again, D.A., and congratulations on your book!

(If you've gotten this welcome before, it's just as a matter of housekeeping. We like to put a copy of the "welcome letter" in each book thread.  It doesn't mean you've done anything wrong, it just helps us know that you know the rules.)

A brief recap of our rules follows:

--We invite you to use your book cover as your avatar and have links to your book and website in your signature. Instructions are posted here

--Please bookmark this thread (using your browser's bookmark/favorite function) so you can update it as we ask that authors have only one thread per book and add to it when there is more information.  You may start a separate thread for each book (or you may have one thread per series of books, or one thread for all of your books, it's your choice).

--While you may respond to member posts to your thread at any time, you may only bump your thread (back-to-back posts by you) once every seven days.  Once you've responded to a member, that resets the clock to zero and you must wait seven days to post, unless another member posts before then.

--We ask that Amazon reviews not be repeated here as they are easy to find at your book link.  Also, full reviews from other sites should not be posted here, but you may post a short blurb and a link to the full review instead.

--Although self-promotion is limited to the Book Bazaar, our most successful authors have found the best way to promote their books is to be as active throughout KindleBoards as time allows.  This is your target audience--book lovers with Kindles!  Please note that putting link information in the body of your posts constitutes self promotion; please leave your links for your profile signature that will automatically appear on each post.  For information on more ways to promote here on KindleBoards, be sure to check out this thread:
Authors: KindleBoards Tips & FAQ.

All this, and more, is included in our Forum Decorum.  Be sure to check it from time to time for the current guidelines and rules.

Oh, and one more thing:  be sure to check out the index threads at the top of the Book Bazaar. . . .there are details there about how you can be listed so that our readers can find you.

Thanks for being part of KindleBoards!  Feel free to send us a PM if you have any questions.

Who or what is prey? For the Tlartox, hunting is more than a passion, more than a way of life. The hunt is identity; the hunt is life itself.  Without the hunt they are not Tlartox. And for the best hunt, one pits claw and tooth against hoof and horn and may the best being win. Krin Tlento has in mind the taking down of a Barendi bull, but this hunt doesn't go as expected and it changes everything.

'Prey' is available as a FREE download at smashwords.com: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/38260

Shoobydoo reviewed 'Prey' on Smashwords, gave it 4 stars, and said:
"I really enjoyed this! This story wouldn't be out of place in a published magazine."

Our own Peter Salisbury enjoyed it: http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php/topic,52223.msg895474.html#msg895474 and said he was very impressed.

Thus far 140 people have dowloaded 'Prey' and Krin Tlento invites you to up that number. It's free -- all it costs is a click; it's short -- a mere 6,000 words; and it's waiting for you.

New? Well, sort of. I searched but have now realized that I've never created a thread for "Prey".

And, Amazon has just set "Prey" free -- only 4 1/2 months after I made it free on Smashwords and B&N. So, free? Yes!

Science Fiction short story. 6000 words

Krin Tlento,of the felid Tlartox, finds herself on the run from the bulls of the barendi herd she was hunting. Her radio sabotaged, she has but one option: to face death with honor, as befits one of the People of Tlar, with her fangs in the throat of a barendi bull. In the unlikely event she should survive, her second priority is to retake her ship from the mutineers who left her to die.

"Prey" takes place in the same universe as "Ghost Fleet", but occurs a few centuries previous to the events in that book.

Pleasant reading.

[Edit to add]: It seems Amazon made it free only in the US. Residents of other countries can get it at Smashwords--link above.

Many thanks. I spent an hour looking through my old posts. Only found the mention in the 99 cent thread. I must be slipping.
