Most of the authors are selling at Amazon, Barnes&Noble, smashwords, and few others. I am just curious to know after reading various posts: which one is working better for you.  Where are you selling more books per month or they are pretty much the same. So far I am selling way more on BN.  Smashwords, I just joined. Wish you all the very best.

I'm having issues at the moment with my books at B&N. Trying to transfer from the Smashwords distribution to Pubit. Anyway, I have to say that overall, Kindle is my best place to sell. Smashwords does a bit of good business and is excellent for giving away copies via coupons though.

Congratulations Katie for your success with kindle. I am sure you will be able to work out any of the issues with BN.

I have just joined SmashWords and have 2 questions: Are you actually selling books at smashwords, may not be as many as kindle?  Secondly, if you use Tables, the format is a problem for me.  I am nonfiction author and need to give data in Table or some similar form.

I wish you all the best with your books.

Mia, any insight on why this is? I ask, because it feels like most of the indie writers I encounter have better luck with Amazon than B&N. Would love any insight you have. Congrats! Smiley

My regular romances do best on Amazon; my erotic romances (under a different name) do best on B&N.

I don't really know. I started in December with one title and in January added more.  And its not big numbers but its a lot more than with Amazon.  On Amazon they are kind of sitting there.   It was 41 in December  101 in January and about 45 so far this month of everything I have up on BN.  On Amazon I didn't start till January.  Jan was 12 Feb 3.  I have been scratching my head trying to figure out how to get the Amazon ones going.

That could be what it is, but I do have two others (Under different name like you) that aren't in the erotic genre that are doing better over there too.

I'm selling 50 to 1 Kindle over B&N (all formats) - 20 to 1 Kindle over paper (all formats, all venues)

Amazon Kindle...hands down. I've gotten 1 Ebook sale from Smashwords for Tales of the Dim Knight v. more than Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. One thing that helps is the direct access I've got to Amazon as opposed to Smashwords where it's a bureaucratic process to change a price or description. For example, this week I'm doing a sale, I just have to lower the price on Amazon, but for all other ebook readers, I've got to create a Smashwords coupon code, because you can't have a quick 6 day sale of a Nook Book if you're doing it through Smashwords because by the time B&N changes your book price, the sale is over.

That's one of the reasons I wanted to go direct through PubIt (BN) the distribution network is so slow via Smashwords. Unfortunately, they are being a pain in the butt! I've been fighting with them for months to get my titles off of Smashwords distribution and into BN direct.

It's funny: I'm probably one of the few indie writers who didn't go the Smashwords route. The guy who did my ebook conversions advised me against it because of Smashwords's Meat Grinder (he felt it was too quirky and wouldn't do my book justice in terms of formatting). So I went the "direct" route. I uploaded directly to Amazon, which as we all know is ridiculously easy. I was lucky that when I started publishing, PubIt! had just gone live, so I use that as well -- it's also turnkey, but B&N needs to catch up with Amazon in terms of the reporting (unless I'm just missing where all this info is). I had been using Lulu to get onto the iBookstore, and it worked perfectly for my first title, but my other three titles are languishing in the Apple Waiting Room from Hell (or so Lulu says). I'll be using a new distribution through eBook Architects, hopefully this spring. (I think it's silly that Apple requires you to have a Mac to upload directly to the iBookstore. I don't need a Kindle or a Nook to upload to those respective stores [I'm a Nookie, but I like the Kindle as well]).

Robyn, I somehow had better luck with BN.  But trying to understand why.  I believe the kindle boards work better than BN discussion forums and I was not promoting at either one of these before.  If this is the reason amazon should pick up and may beat BN. Wish you all the very best.

Dr. S,

Where do you access B&N discussion forums?  Do you mean nookboards.com, or is there another place that you are aware of?

Thanks,

John

Amazon by a huge amount.  Last month I sold 1500 on amazon and 6 on B&N.  I did publish through Smashwords though, I'm beginning to wonder if that was a bad move or if I just need to find a way to market on B&N better.

I am doing better on Amazon, too. Probably because I haven't yet found many ways to advertise for BN.

At this point, I've been in the queue on Smashwords for three weeks, unable to get my books in the premium category, so a big zero from that outlet so far. Roughly 800 sales on Amazon in that same time period.

John,

Sign in at your Pubit account, then go to the 'Support' link. From there go to 'Getting Started', then go down the column of questions until you get to 'Where can I connect with other Pubit readers', etc. (or something like that). This will take you to the forums, where you can create a name for yourself and start posting.

I have never done a promo under my other name on the Nook boards, and yet my books are selling well anyway.  It just seems that there's some sort of magic that happens over there occasionally.  It also seems that there are certain genres (paranormal and erotic romance, young adult) that do well there, too.

John, try this link. I don't know what they call them.  But are something similar to these kindle boards. But kindle board are better, IMO.

With my newest release on amazon sales are picking up there.  Blood Whore was published the 7th and I have had five sales where on B&N only one with this title, so maybe it just varies with the book.  I was happy to finally see something happening there!  Cartwheel happy.  Smiley
