I went there about 2 days ago ... started signing up... can't continue because I have to go through all the crazy non-US stuff. I'm sorry, excuse me for ranting just now but isn't it about time that mega corps like Google stopped with this "US-only" stuff, especially on the back of the fact that they already pay out to non-US AdSense providers without any of the same details requirements. Likewise I tried signing up for B&N today to put ToL on their NOOK system, sorry, "US-only". Sick of it.
Paul.

I have one book up there. There were a number of things I didn't like about the process, but bottom line: No sales equals no interest from me. They don't have the eyeballs (yet?) for books. They are trying, it appears, but in the meantime, they haven't convinced me to go through the hassle of not only tracking what is going on, uploading books--but also advertising to get people to buy from there.
I know with Google ads, you have to earn 100 dollars before they payout--maybe someone here can say what the payout has to be for books???

I was thinking about it, but changed my mind when I heard stories of allowing too much of the book to be shown. I also wouldn't want discounts to mess up Amazon's price.
On the plus side, I've been checking out independent brick and mortar bookstores about their policies for stocking my print book from a small, independent press and saw several mentions of Google E-books. I don't know how it works, but I assume you can buy Google e-books through them to put on your e-reader. I don't know if they carry self-published works, but if they just go to a Google catalog, they might.
Joyce

Thanks for the response Jeff. I know these are under reports. That's the page it opens when I log in. But where are the books sold or how does ad earning works. Please respond if you happen to know. Thanks.

I've been very frustrated with Google and have yet to list one of my books or one of WDWPUB's book. I watched talk out of some conferences that they are doing well, especially in romance, but having a very frustrating time with their system.

Sorry Paul. I like to see BN and goodle selling worldwide too. They do ask for worldwide copy rights for some reason. I am sure they will expand. It is just a matter of time. It is hard to handle all that so sudden. They can hardly handle US sales at this time. Wish all the best

I think you're looking at the wrong reports tab. You want the reports tab under Google Editions. The tabs at the top of the page that you land on looks like this: Books | Reports | My Account | Product Setup | Google Editions Click on Google Editions. Now it should look like this below the selected Google Editions tab: Reports | Show eBooks | Needs Action | Default Settings | Spreadsheet Settings Click Reports. Edited to add - the report looks like this: Google eBook Summary Report for Feb 1, 2011 - Feb 20, 2011 Title Author | ISBN | EISBN | List Price | Sold By | Country | Units Purchased | Units Refunded | Net Units Sold | Total Publisher Earnings

Only 20% of book is their standard suggestion. That is what I did. But I thinks it's up to you. You may be able to chose not give away any. Yes, for some reason they do reduce the price from what you suggest. Just a sales pitch, I guess.

Thanks a lot for the detailed excellent explanation. Very clear now. But I don't know how often they update. BN was having lot of trouble for regular reporting. But they have fixed the problem now and works very well. I do appreciate your response, Jeff. Wish you all the best.

Yes, for some reason they do reduce the price from what you suggest. Just a sales pitch, I guess.
But they pay royalties based upon the suggested retail price. The downside is that Amazon will price match and if you're on the 70% contract they'll pay you based upon the reduced price.

When their reports first went live I bought one of my books and the sale showed up very soon. A day or two later, as I recall.

To be honest with you, I don't know even their royalty rate. I don't know if it is about 70% like amazon and bn. For amazon, my books are priced high enough to qualify for 70% even at their reduced sale price. I may try to increase google prices to adjust for their discount, if they will allow me to do it. I am quite new with google and still trying to understand. Thanks Jeff. Any info you provide is helpful.

I've published 4 books on Google, but I'm pretty disillusioned with it. The interface is clumsy, and the books look -- well, dingy. It was a bitch to get everything set up the way they wanted, and it took over 6 weeks for them to iron out some "technical difficulties" which I still don't understand before they went "live". They've been up now about 6 weeks, and I haven't sold anything.
We are not amused.

I believe they are still in the beta stage to set it up. I am having very similar situation as you described. Almost the same word by word. They want to start big and it will take time. How long no one knows. Thanks for sharing your experience. I am not alone.
