I still haven't gotten the update. My wireless is on and I'll keep it on until I get the update, just hope it's soon.

Thanks, I may just wait a few more days and if I still don't have it then I'll download it manually.

They've only just annonced it as 'for real' and it will take a few days to send it to everyone. . .there are a lot of Kindles out there. . . .I wouldn't worry about it, but maybe leave your Kindle's wireless on overnight and the device plugged in. If it's not come down in a week or two, the manual method is easy.

You may not want the update. I did mine manually, followed all the instructions.
It slows everything down. The Kindle menus seems to take forever to function. Page turns take longer.
It forgets all the Wi-Fi networks but eventually finds them again.

Someone in another thread commented that it slows everything down too. Maybe I won't get it (won't leave wireless on long enough to download). According to what e-mail says is in update, there's nothing that I particularly care about.

I got the email this morning telling me about the update. Since DS#1 has the K3, I'm not bothering to tell him about it at all.. he has enough books on his K atm to last a few weeks or more. If it pushes to his K at that time, we'll worry about it then.

I'm not trying to be disagreeable, but I did the update manually this morning and if anything, my Kindle now seems faster... I just ran it through a bunch of functioning tests and everything seems fine, page turns, wifi, menu items, sleep, wake... all seems good to me.

I too got the e-mail from Amazon this morning, but I think I'll wait awhile before updating. Following the update, is the percentage line still there? Or has it been replaced with page numbers? I hope it's still there; I like knowing how much of the book I have left to read...

% is still there. Locations no longer show. You have to hit menu and it will show locations and the page numbers (for books that have them).

I just got the e-mail this morning too. I'm traveling this week, so I hope to get the update tonight. I'll leave my Wi-Fi on (I normally do not).
If people updated manually, will they still get the automatic update? And if so, has anyone noticed the difference between the two?

No. If you updated manually you won't get the auto one as it's the exact same update file.

Note that the automatic aupdate is available only via Wi-Fi, not 3G.

I have just upgraded to 3.1 and don't perceive any noticeable slowdown in menu operation or page turning. Page turning actually seems faster than before.

Hello everyone! Glad to hear about an update for the Kindle 3.
I do have a question to those who have updated. Do any of you have the custom screen saver patch installed and do they carry over to the new update?
Thanks!

As posted in a separate thread, my problems with the update appear to be solved with more restarts.
Before the last restart, the Wi-Fi was unreliable, most operations slowed, and collections disappeared from the Kindle.
These now seem to be cured.

I got the update last night! Today I noticed a crack in the corner leading down from the screen. Guess I'll be calling CS.

From what others have posted--it will still work. But you lose the option to remove any hacks. So you could have warranty problems if you had to send it in since you can't uninstall hacks first.

I installed the update manually a couple of weeks ago. Noticed no difference in functionality, speed, etc.

Thanks for your response! I'll just stick with 3.0.2 for now. I'm glad Kindle doesn't force updates on us!

Not sure what you mean by force updates? Your Kindle should update to 3.1 at some point when you have your wireless on, whether you want it to or not.

Yes, last night around 10pm, I finally turned wifi back on figuring it was something I would inevitably do since I wanted to test my new kindle "HomePage" (a text file I ported over from my Blackberry that has my favorite links). Got some of the books that were waiting the last 4 days and this morning - 3.1 was installed. I even see a whole bunch of the supporting "page number" files matching books I already had.
I've just copied over the new 3.1 jailbreak file and will reboot soon to hopefully reinstall my screensavers.

Same here...not being contrary, just stating my personal experience with the update. I did a manual update about a week ago and have not noticed any negative issues. I think my page turns are a little faster. Everything is operating just fine.
