I just ordered my eight year old her own Kindle.

Her brother is about to kill her for stealing his on a nightly basis and she pesters me for mine constantly.

Her campaign was fairly elegant... she is reading a big 600 page book and reasonably pointed out how much easier on her little hands a Kindle would be and said she'd prefer one to a DS or a laptop. She also offered me all the money she had in the world ($42.18) if I'd get her one. So, considering she's very mature for her age and never breaks any of her possessions... I caved. It will be here Thursday.

So now five people in the family have one (myself, Grandma, Grandpa, big brother and now little sister).

I guess the true test of a device's worth is whether or not you'd buy it again. Where we stand is pretty clear. Roll Eyes

Very nice... a whole Kindle family.  Sweet that she handed over all her money in the world.

I'm waiting to save up for a DX... for now the wife gets to dominate the K3 Smiley

Aw, how sweet! Maybe she could get her own cover with her money! Ah, I would have killed to have something like a Kindle when I was her age- actually, the sweet spot was age 14, when my dad let me read Stephen King's The Stand (all 1000+ pages!) and the Harry Potter books started becoming doorstops. Even at 8, though, a Kindle would have speared my parents all the books that I brought on vacation with me. You have such a lucky little girl! I hope she enjoys it!

I was thinking the same think about her money. I'll foot the bill on the device and she can shop for a cover/skin with her funds. I'm sure it will be a purple theme as that is her favorite color.

She is a great kid and just crazy about reading, flashlights under the covers at night waaay past bedtime every night.

It is going to be a surprise on Thursday. Can't wait to see her face when she realizes she convinced me.

Now that I finally have one, I can't believe I waited this long.  I carry it with me everywhere I go.  I will definitely be getting one for each family member too.  It is totally worth it.  I just got mine for Christmas and with the amount of money I have saved on free and discounted books it has more than already paid for itself.

Thank God - a child reading - makes me leap for joy.  I really hope she enjoys the Kindle.

That was me as a kid, flashlights under the covers.  Zai, it would be great if you could get a picture of her opening the Kindle, if you are comfortable sharing that.  I would love to see her reaction!

Watching her read is indeed a joy to me. As an elementary school teacher especially so, as that is a battle I fight everyday at work.

I find it hard to chide her about the flashlight under the covers as I did that as often as I could get away with it as a kid.

It will be a camera worthy moment for certain. I'll be sure to post a pic.

I love the picture of her reading - she is so absorbed, you just know that the rest of the world has faded away and she is lost in her book.

Aw, that is so precious! I'm in school to be a teacher myself (as was I raised by a teacher), and I too love seeing a kid enjoying a book. It would be a tragedy to me if my own future children didn't like to read, as they are very likely to be named after book characters.  Cheesy

Congrats! We just gave our daughter (21) a Kindle as an early birthday present. That brings us up to 3 just since Christmas!

Love being a multiple Kindle household!

What a great story with photos to go with!!  I suspect my daughter will be getting one for her birthday. She reads constantly and I have never been able to keep up with her in terms of keeping the house stocked with books. (the house if FULL of books but she reads them so fast it's scary. She's used my Kindle some but will enjoy her own - with her own books, free samples, etc.

This is partly why I fell in love with the Kindle - it's actually conceivable that we each will have one at some point. Unlike the iPad, which my husband really wanted me to get instead. (he has one for work and I like it - but between the cost, the weight of the device, and the backlit screen I do not enjoy reading on it)

Congratulations to the young reader!  Her Kindle will take her to so many interesting places.  I wish I would have had one when I was young.  I have loved reading since I was four years old and discovered that there was adventure beyond "See Spot Run" when I started reading my sister's fifth-grade level books.  As I grew, the family complained that I always had my nose in a book.  If I'd have had a Kindle, the parents would have never seen me again...

Kudos to you for letting her explore the myriad of books on her own Kindle.
