Do teens like Kindles?

How many of you are teens?  Do you prefer the Kindle to traditional books?  How many of your friends have them.  I'm noticing that most of my friends have Kindles, but not their teen children.

My 15 year old DS reads on my Kindle.  He toyed with asking for one of his own for Christmas, but got an Ipod instead and immediately downloaded the Kindle app.

 I just gave my 17 year old niece one. She loves it. She even listens to it while cooking.

My boyfriend's 15 and 19 year old siblings both have them. They both use them all the time.

I got my 14 year old DD a kindle 2 Christmases ago. She *loves* it!! Prefers it to real books.

My 19 year old has had a Kindle for over 2 years and cannot imagine not having it.  My 16 year old loves hers, though she has only had it 6 months. After my son got his, I know of about 6 of his classmates that also got them.

Got my 12 yr old granddaughter a kindle for Christmas. She loves it!!!  I gave her a Amazon gift card for books and told her I would keep her in books all year. I have had to reload it several times already. She is reading an average of 1 book/week. She liked to read before but it has really ignited her passion for reading! Several of her friends now want one and are asking for a kindle for birthdays.

Mixed reviews at our house.  My 14 yr old doesn't like reading on the Kindle but my 12 and 8 yr olds love it!

My sister an I got my 12 year old niece one for Christmas and she loves it.  She is an avid reader and she reads at least a book a week on it in addition to required reading assignments for school.

Amy, I'm not a teen but I'm under thirty and about to get my first Kindle. Maybe the reason you don't see so many teens with Kindles is because of the price? A lot of parents might not trust their kids not to break a fairy expensive gadget.

Then again, I know a lot of people who say their kids (as young as eight) have them.

My twelve year old grandson loves reading on mine when he comes over to spend the night every few weeks.  He's a very smart kid and is an avid reader.
I see a Kindle in his not to distant future.

first ereader in jr high/early high school.
I got my kindle when i was nineteen. my parents were only convinced to get another for me when my electronic dictionary died (after eight years) and a replacement would have costed about 250. they considered that it may have been better if they spent another 100 for an ereader with a dictionary. I love my kindle 1 (recently deceased) and Kindle 3. Looking at a DX

My 14 year old has a K2 and LOVES it.  He takes it to school every day, and reads in his downtime on the bus and during classes.  He says he knows of at least 20 kids at his school that got new kindles or nooks for christmas, and a couple of teachers.  They all bring them to school daily and discuss what they are reading.  I told him he should start an ereader club!  He talks about having conversations with one teacher that has a nook and how they compare.  He even searched through amazon with his librarian!  It has been really awesome.  

It works really well, and I am planning to get kindles for the younger kids when they get a bit older.  In our district, they are required to carry a book with them at all times once they reach Junior high school. So, that is the time frame I am considering.  Once they are in 6th grade, unless they show a high interest before that point, they will each have an ereader.

Hi everyone.  Thanks for the input.  I am a high school teacher and I've noticed that my students sport ipods, cell phones, digital cameras... you name it. When it comes to my avid readers I usually see them with a traditional book in hand and I wasn't sure if this was because the ereader was considered "uncool" or if it was just due to the fact that I live in a very rural area and perhaps the reason was the money, as someone mentioned before.  I suppose it is possible that they have the kindle apps on their ipods and such.  Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm glad kids are using them!

My children are avid readers and would love to have a Kindle if I would buy it for them.  Unfortunately, they have a frugal mom!  The price of the device isn't what holds me back; it's the price of the books.  I'm happy reading classics and web content on my Kindle and reading newer releases from the library.  The kids read mainly newer releases, so they wouldn't be as satisfied.  We are going on an extended vacation this summer for which I might end up purchasing another as a family device.  For 2 1/2 weeks, I am sure we could come up with a compromise that would satisfy all in terms of content and price, but it wouldn't be a means to exclusively read from for a long while.  I've just never been one to purchase a lot of books.

A friend of mine is a jr high English teacher and said that after Christmas, a ton of her students returned to school with e-readers. All of my kids want one (ages 8-15). I think it's just a matter of time before kids have e-readers. Avid teen readers will definitely want them. And I think text books will eventually go on them.

In the 9th grade, I read Stephen King's The Stand, and at about that time, the Harry Potter books became doorstops. I would have killed for a Kindle.
