Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

I recently read a post where somebody said they simply overwrote the installed screensavers - instead of doing the hack - and the update worked just fine. I've tried to find the post again and I can't. I'm curious to know how this was done because I tried it and it didn't work. I'd be interested in hearing what you did.

I remember that post, although not which thread it was in, and I think it ended up that the guy had installed the hack and forgot about it.

It was somewhere in the long thread about the new update. He couldn't get the update to work then remembered that he had did something to the screensaver code. Something like that anyway.

I think at mobileread they have posted a new hack that works with the update. I would rather have my own pics than the update,
so I am just leaving it as is. I do have to say, seeing you can add your own SS easily to the Nook, is a huge selling point for me. I
think the Kindle has the technology to do this, it has a photo mode. It irritates me that Amazon does not make "save as screen saver" an option. Customizing our devices is a basic human need!

I think this is the post you are referring to.

Yes, OP did misremember and had to uninstall the hack to install the update.

Thanks, all. I was hoping there was a different option other than the hack. I had such a difficult time uninstalling it before to get an update so I decided not to use it again. I'm back to ugly dead authors and I hate it.

Its not hard to uninstall?? Just redownload the .zip file and once unzipped, the uninstall is there as well as the readme with instructions. Just put the uninstall in the root directory of your Kindle and update it.  (It sounds worse than it is.  Just follow the directions under "Font hack as easy as I can get them but use uninstall file)

I uninstalled my SS and my font hack, got the update, then put both hacks back on with little problems.....well, I needed help to figure out why the new SS file wouldn't unzip.  Turned out I needed some free program peazip or something to unzip it.  '

Good luck!

I used the uninstall file and it appeared to work (my pictures were gone and the ugly pre-installed ones were back) but there was still something going on that prevented the update. Even restoring to factory settings wouldn't work. I contacted CS and they said it was because of the hack. I never told them I had it, but they had me leave WN on so they could troubleshoot my Kindle and that's what they found. I finally got it to work, but never used the hack again after that. I keep hoping Amazon will make that an available feature in one of their updates.

With the Nook supporting user-defined screensavers, I'm guessing that we might see that ability in the relatively near future as well.

Especially since that was a feature of the original Kindle... hard to understand why they'd take away a feature like that.

Well, it wasn't a documented feature.  So they probably felt that locking it down wouldn't be a big deal.  I'm guessing that people were calling them complaining about it and stuff and they didn't really want to support it.

I sure hope so.  That is a great feature and so easy to do.  I really like the cover flow of the book covers for locating what you are reading.  If it were only sold by Amazon, a company I feel is more stable than B&N.
