I am totally confused about the purpose of these threads. I am sure these will be well designed with a purpose. I am comparatively new and may be veteran members can help.
Is it to promote books? Or to learn Or to kill time..?
Here's what's not clear to me: If it is to promote books then we are selling to sellers because book promotion is allowed only on threads meant for authors.
Not only book promotion even free information related to any of the books is not allowed on reader threads like "not so kindle." Because that will be book promotion. Why would readers not interested in having free info from someone who specializes in certain area? I understand that fiction is not based on specialization but many nonfiction topics require specialization.
Yes, last but not the least, I do understand that one can pickup few good points from other authors about publishing and marketing after spending some amount of time. So I do appreciate this purpose. Wishing all the best to fellow authors.

It's meant to be a "community" of writers. Hang around. If you don't see a purpose after a month or so, then chop wood for a living or go back to writing full time. (apologies to Mark Twain on the chopping wood comment for writers)

I don't know about the purpose, but I can post my opinions on what the boards are.
As Mike said, the cafe is a place to hang with fellow writers. Killing time, yes, but you can't work all the time, and I wouldn't hesitate to say I've learned something new every day.
The rest of the boards are a place for readers to talk about reading. As a horror writer with some titles to be available very soon (and in my sig), I can talk to other horror fans. If I make comments that jibe with other's notions of good horror, they might just follow my sig.
That's at least part of the strategy for all social networking. We might not have the cash to get our ads in front of people multiple times to make a hard sell, but we hang out, become people to them, make some sales and eventually maybe build a fan base.

I'm not sure what you mean by "kindle threads". But...
The purpose of KindleBoards is for Kindle owners to have a place to talk. They can talk about the books they're reading, the device itself, accessories and anything else that strikes their fancy. The Book Bazaar and Writer's Cafe are small parts of the big picture. Authors are welcome on KB, but but it wasn't made for them. The rules on promotion keep the board from descending into spammy chaos.
My advice: When you are outside of the Cafe and Bazaar, forget you are a writer. Be a good community member. Be an interested reader. Be a fun poster. Never "angle" posts to drive traffic to your books. When you are "out there", you are the product, not your books.

Actually, this is not a writer centric Forum. Sorry. It's a lovers of Kindles forum that happens to have a specific place for writer's to promote their wares, and another where they can talk "shop" with each other. Non-writers do know where that is so we can look to our hearts content without being barraged if we do not want to be. Harvey has told the story of the beginning of these boards more than once here. He started these boards as a place for Kindle lovers to hang out and help each other and talk books. There are almost 40,000 members here on Kindleboards. I would honestly bet less than 5,000 are authors. The authors are just more vocal as a group than their numbers show.
As for why Kindle? well, there are Nookboards too. Here we just focus on Kindle. Mobilereads doesn't focus on any 1 reader.
Oh and you are welcome to talk about your areas of expertise if a thread arises talking about something you know about, just don't go into that thread pushing your book. you can advise and educate without overt pushing & marketing.

I'm not a writer as such, but I check the threads in here a lot. I never know when I'll either learn something or will get inspired to write or read.

Thanks for your advice. I don't plan to chopwoods but will continue to write as a hobby. I realize now that it is primarily for kindle enthusiasts as the name kindle boards suggests. Thanks.
