My darling wife, who has lovingly dubbed my K2 'Your GeekBook' was reading a very heavy large, quite beautifully leather-bound DTB of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' in bed last night.
She looked over at me and said, 'I should be reading this on your GeekBook. This thing weighs a ton.'
I went into the 'Kindle Downloads Guide' from Feedbooks.com, clicked a couple of times and said to her, 'Here. Give it a try.'
She was stunned. 'You had it on there?'
'Nope. Just downloaded it.'
'How much did THAT cost?'
'Nothing. It's in the public domain.'
'wow'
heh, heh, heh, Here little kid. The first one's free.

ROFL I have done similar things when I have been recommended a book. I did it in the car with someone the other day and the look of astonishment was hilarious!

I do that at my bookclub when someone mentions a book recommendation. I have a sample downloaded in less than a minute. Now they're so used to it, they laugh and say, "Dianne will have it in 2 seconds!". At least three members are buying Kindles. One by one, we will convert them! "Come over to the dark ('er light) side, Luke."

It's even better that that! If you download the Kindle Download Guide you have the whole searchable catalog right there on your Kindle. I hope I'm not breaking any Kindleboards rules, but: The Kindle Download Guide is the easiest way to download public domain and creative commons books from Feedbooks. It could be described as having an on-demand library on your Kindle. * Step 1: The guide is a simple file that you need to add on your Kindle. The URL for this file is http://www.feedbooks.com/kindleguide o Open the browser on your Kindle and open this URL o OR download this file and send it to your Kindle using the USB cable o OR download this file and send it to your Kindle using your e-mail: [user]@kindle.com * Step 2: Find yourself something to read. You could: o Flip through the guide, you'll find books in alphabetical order, then authors in alphabetical order and finally lists (There's a table of contents for all this, you can access this any time you want through the Kindle user interface). o Type a keyword using the search feature of your Kindle. Works very well as soon as the guide is fully indexed (you'll have to wait for a few seconds after downloading the guide for your Kindle to fully index this file). Hope that helps!

I fear that you're right, Mel. She goes in for an overnight surgery and I anticipate that I'll be without spouse and without Kindle for that night. Bereaved and bereft, I think it is.

I've started converting a few of my friends as well, it's just so much more convenient than hefting a bunch of books around. I travel quite frequently and like to read on flights, trains, and buses, and the K2 makes it convenient.

After she has read on the Kindle for a while, then tries to go back to DTB's, you'll know for sure if she is as hooked as the rest of us.

It has been interesting to watch. I put the 3acp skin on the GeekBook™ last evening. This sort of uber-geekiness would have elicited snickers of derision at least, I thought. Nope. She admired it and asked why I had chosen woodgrain. (I'll post pics one of these days.)
She's working her way through 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', but also reading Randy Pausch's 'Last Lecture'. Now one of the big things I like about the Kindle is that I am usually reading at least three or four books at once, and switching on the Kindle is simple. I think whe's at least seeing the practicallity of the device.
She's a tremendously frugal sort, though, and I don't know how quickly she'll see the need for GeekBook™ II. (Although if I take the original back, she may experience pangs of longing that overwhelm her fiscal responsibility. We shall see.)

I've actually been on her side of the issue in the past--though I'm the techie in the house and normally a gadget freak, I couldn't see the point in the iPhone when it came out, and thought my husband was nuts for spending that kind of money on a lousy phone--bought before the price drop, no less. The "keyboard" drove me nuts, I didn't find the UI intuitive at all, it was bigger in size than my little ancient Motorola v60i (man, that was a workhorse of a phone!), etc. etc. etc. About 4 months later, he ended up in the emergency room & ultimately in the hospital for a week. In my rush to get out the door, I grabbed everything--including his iPhone, knowing he had numbers in his contacts that I would need. Over the course of that week, that device was with me constantly. The hospitals here in Geekville by the Sound have all installed wireless, so access wasn't an issue. Everything I needed that would normally require a laptop was right here in my hand; I could even handle some of the emergency stuff for work via email. While he was asleep, I could follow the forums I was on, play a few games, and reach anyone who needed updates. Learned that the keyboard actually was pretty good, the auto fill in was a huge plus, and hey, you know, the size of this thing isn't as bad as I thought it would be. And I probably drove the doctors completely nuts as I argued every detail through with them--after all, I had all the background references I needed at my fingertips (and yes, caught them in a mistake). Once he was more functional, of course, he wanted it back. LOL Yeah, buddy, here's a nice DTB and the TV remote to entertain yourself with. You put me through all this crap, the phone is mine until you're out of this place! When we got out, he took it back & I went back to my voice-only Motorola & tried to decide if the still $300+ pricetag to move to an iPhone was doable. Or worth it. At the time, it was a budget hit I wasn't quite ready to take. At Christmas a month later, he bought one for me and I've never looked back. Geekbook2 is definitely in your future, start budgeting now. Over at our place, I'm waiting for hubby to decide he has to have a K2. I figure the trip we're taking in two weeks will do him in, just about the time he has to buy a book at the airport coming home because he's out of reading material!
