I have noticed that several people own all three generations of the kindle. May I ask to those of you that own more than one kindle, what exactly do you do with more than one?

Don't know about anyone else but it's no secret that my K1 and I enjoy our daily bubble baths together. My K3 and I are together at all other times. Surprisingly, neither one is jealous.

I have a K2 and a K3. Occasionally my husband will read something on the K2 and I have also loaned it to a friend who wanted to read a particular book that I had on kindle.
K3 is always with me in my purse.

I have two K2s. One is to lend friends just like I would a hardbound or paperback I wish to share.

I have 2 K3's. Eventually my daughter will exchane her K2 (used to be mine) for one of them. In the meantime, my husband has become addicted to Every Word on it. I'm hoping he'll read a book on it eventually but he's being stubborn. When the exchange happens he can either have the K2 or I'll give it to my sister-in-law.

I wanted to keep a Kindle 1 as a souvenir of "my very first Kindle" experience. Almost as a museum piece. I'm still thinking about buying a used one, just so I can have it around. There was a dramatic difference between the Kindle 1 and the Kindle 2 -- and I'm sure someday they'll be a collector's item.
I also just recently purchased a Kindle DX, so it'll be stomping around the house, intimidating my tiny Kindle 2. The larger screen is important for reading PDF files (or for playing games where the print is really tiny, like the rent on the property cards in Monopoly.) And I figure if I ever ending up looking at anything that has a lot of images -- like a map or a detailed photograph -- I'll really appreciate the bigger screen. But obviously it's heavier, so when I want to hold a lighter Kindle, there'll be a dramatic difference when I shift back to my Kindle 2!
(I felt like I had to respond to your question, because "Me and My Kindle" is the name of my blog!)

Purchased my K1 in June-ish of 2008. Loved it. . . .resisted the K2 when it came out in Februrary of 2009. But the DX that came out summer of '09 called to me. . . I figured it would be good for reading PDF's -- tax pubs and such -- and it was. Did not resist when the K3 came out in August of '10. Though K1 was still going strong, it just had too many new features, along with an improved price point, for me to resist. And my son had been murmuring about a Kindle so I figured I could give the K1 to him to see how he liked it. So that's what I did. And he DID like it. . .so I got him his own K3 for Christmas because, again, it's just a much improved device. AND my aunt had been making noise about the friends of hers who'd told her she should try an e-reader so I decided to give her my DX at Christmas. . . severe macular degeneration meant she had to use one of the biggest fonts and the smaller screen wasn't practical (I'd considered giving her the K1 when the boy got his K3). She LOVED it. . . . .and since her death in January it's been passed on to another aunt who is also enjoying it. So, right now, I only have 1 Kindle -- a K3, though my brother's DX is also on my account for convenience . . . we read a lot of the same kinds of books so it just made sense to not buy them all twice.

Thanks guys for all your great answers. I just knew there had to be some good reasons. Maybe I should consider a second one.

I have a DXG which I use only in the house and a more portable K3 which goes with me everywhere else. I used to have a K2, but I recently gave that to my SIL.

I have a K1 that still works just fine. I didn't buy the K2.... but the K3 was such an improvement that I decided to purchase one. My K1 has been loaned to my SIL because she had back surgery and wasn't going to be able to get to the library for quite some time. I've told her that she's welcome to use it for as long as she likes. If she hangs onto it.... that's fine with me. If she returns it... I'll continue to loan it out if needed.

My K1 is lent out.
My K2 just returned after being lent out for over a year.
DX is still here for the larger screen for some games and a book with knitting diagrams and I have also used it while reading a book on the K3 that had maps.. the maps being much more readable on the DX. And the DX went with me for many a day and mile before I got my K3.
But the K3 is always with me.

We gave one of our two K2s to a friend who loves to read, but she couldn't afford to buy a Kindle. After that, I read ebooks on my iPad for a while, but I got a K3 a few months after they came out. Also, my wife's K2 had a problem about a year ago, and Amazon replaced it. So, even though we have only two Kindles now, we've actually owned four of them (3 Kindle2 and 1 Kindle3).

I rough-house with my K2...its always naked and its software tinkered with (fonts and screensaver). The K3 is pristine and barely leaves the house. The K2 gets thrown in with the backpack and taken almost everywhere - its the one that I don't mind getting a little wet (from reading in the light rain).

I resisted replacing my K1 when collections came out. I wanted the larger screen available with the DX but was not willing to pay the way higher price. When the DXG was announced I pounced. A better screen, collections, and lower price was all I needed.
My K1 is my Husbands e-reader, which he never uses. It is used when people visit the house and when I am going to be around water.

I have a DXG and a K3. Big screen DXG for reading at home and K3 for reading on the go. All purses I buy now have to be able to carry K3, preferably in an outside zip pocket.
