what is the best way to make images (pictures or other high-quality pictures) Kindle (3) -friendly? I am running into the following problems:

1. Black/grey/white contrast is not strong enough. Needs to be "sharper".

2. Can still see words through the image (which did not happen with the stock photos).

3. Would like to make the background (the area around the image after being cropped) black on some of the images.

4. Would like to have to crop as little as possible from the photo to make it the appropriate size/resolution.

I am using a Mac and Gimp. I have tried to use some tutorials but it did not seem to work like they were suggesting. I have also used the "screen saver generator" site, but find that it often does not crop, create contrast, etc. they way I would like the picture to look.

I am sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere!! Thank you in advance for any help you can give!

There was a short discussion on the ghosting issue here: http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php?topic=52399.0.
