The Moon in Deep Winter

Kindle Edition published 2008-01-10
Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Ok, I haven't even had my Kindle 30 days yet and this is what I've bought for it so far:

2 Decalgirl skins
Oberon cover
Vera Bradley bag, I'm thinking I need a bowler bag too.
Borsa Bella bag
fuzzy fingers
fabric from Ebay to match Oberon
Fossil handbag to carry it in
not to mention at least 10+ books.

AND, I'm sending the above said fabric to Melissa tomorrow to make a Travel bag for me.
Less than 30 days, people!

I purchased:
1 Kindle Klassic
50 books
3 Decal Girl skins
2 Oberon covers (sold 1)
2 M-edge covers
1 Strangedog cover
1 Borsa Bella travel bag for my Kindle.  Liked Borsa Bella so well I purchased
a hipster and gadget bag for my daughter's birthday
1 Mighty Brite
1 E-illuminator (would like to sell)
1 Light wedge (paperbook size -- would like to sell)
1 4gb sd card (good grief)
1 spare battery

I justified purchasing a Kindle because a) I would save money on books; and b) it would be easier to carry rather than packing books to take on trips.

It has become painfully obvious to me that I haven't saved any money since purchasing my Kindle.  However, it is much easier to carry my Kindle/accessories in my beautiful, brand new Borsa Bella bag, than packing all those books.  BUT I think I need a new purse!

And just today I received a Levenger catalog.  Page 44 - Thai Book Rest -- "A More Relaxing Way to Read".  It is certainly an elegant book rest and colors are gorgous.  www.levenger.com  Oh dear.  Here I go again. . . Shocked

All right Stitch!!  Now... how many covers and skins does your baby have?  Smiley

Let's see

2 M-Edge covers
I have bought about 35 or so books
1 book light
4 borsa bella bags
2 coach purses to carry the new kindle (because you have to have variety)
1 Peeramid pillow

I think that's about it.  Cheesy   I need to invest in a SD card for the little guy.  Any idea's?

Go to Staples (or whatever store is near you) and buy whatever is on sale. IMO, they are a commodity item. Brand doesn't matter.

Wow, you guys.  Just WOW.  I'm thinking poor MyK is DEPRIVED!  Not counting books because I haven't figured out which books were free and which I paid for out of my 24 pages (home page) I have purchased:

Cover, can't remember manufacturer.  Not M-edge or Oberon, not that spendy.
Decal Girl skin... just ONE.
Jtote bag.  This is the most expensive bag I've ever owned, purchased as a DIRECT result of seeing it on KB.
Light wedge
Numerous booklights (trying to find the "perfect" one)
iGo tip for KK
Peeramid pillow

And that's all I can think of right now.  Poor MyK!

I was counting the minutes and I did love it. But I also got the purple ROH which I love an eensy bit more. And I realized that I am not a cover switcher. I mean, I knew this but I thought I would change -- but I didn't. The red cover was sitting here and every day I'd say, Oh I should put that on and then I wouldn't do it. I knew in my heart of hearts it would probably go on just sitting there and it was better for the cover to be in the hands of someone who would actually be using it instead of looking at it.

On top of that, buying and selling here is so darn easy!  Grin

L
I honestly don't recall which sweepstakes it was anymore. It was one from some conference I attended. But I bounced around my house dancing and caroling " I won a Kindle" for days. My DH was very happy when it finally arrived.

I am a bit nutsy with reading. On the weekends  I can easily read 2 or so books a day.

I now giggle when I see the phrase "avid reader" because there was an article that came out not long after the release of the K2 about cost justrifying the Kindle. He suggested that the discount on the ebooks vs the DTB version did not have the Kindle paying for itself at all. His reasoning was that "as an avid reader, reading 2 paperbacks a month" it would not pay for itself. I was dumbfounded at someone calling themselves an avid reader when they read 2 paperbacks a month...

I don't doubt that most people here are avid readers in the truest sense...I may be a rabid reader! My DH says I don't read books, I inhale them... I don't have a problem with that Smiley He is just happy he does not have to build me any more bookshelves.

Sad to say, I have already read most of them. I have about 25 samples currently tempting me, as do all those free books. Arrrrggghh what a problem to have!

I saw that article & about died laughing.  Pick any given day where we don't have much going on, and I'll go through two-four books, depending on size & content.  When the Harry Potter sequels came out, I always got them before hubby did, because it would take him several days to get through them, while I'd finish them hours after the UPS guy had delivered them.  Hubby used to notice that the DTB cover was different every time he walked by.  LOL  "Finished already?"  At least I won't hear that anymore!

In DTB form, I average 100+ pages an hour in most books, and I tend to read new material straight through.  On Kindle, I suspect I'm reading a little slower, but I tend to be more inclined to take breaks.  Still, I've already lost track of how many books I've read on it, and I live in fear of running out of reading material.  Thankfully I'm a re-reader!

The huge disadvantage of reading fast (and a lot) on the Kindle is that it seems to suck the batteries down a lot quicker than everyone else is experiencing.  Sad  I go through a minimum of 1/3 of the battery icon most days, without wireless & with likely no indexing going on.

I work around that by charging it in my car (I have a 115V plug) or off of my laptop during the day.

My major disadvantage to reading so fast is the pocketbook pain!

I am soooo jealous  Grin  I only read 5-6 books a week, depending on what is going on in our lives.  I have way too many books on the kindle and afraid I'll never get through them.  My DTB club just drives me nuts as I read DTBs much slower, probably because I skip around too much  Wink  I'm not rabid, but maybe close to avid  Roll Eyes
