Many authors liked smashwords when asked about various publishers and sellers. Feel free to share your experience.

I have a question and will appreciate your input:

Anyone familiar with "Affiliate Marketing Program" that smashwords use.  It sets at 11% for affiliate.  Does it help to pay more than standard 11% commission to affiliates?

Thanks and wish you all the very best.

My stories are in the program, but I've never any indication of anyone using it.

Yes, I'm in Smashwords affiliate program. In return, it doesn't compare to the Amazon affiliate program.

Excuse my ignorance. But what are these affiliate programs? What is the purpose and who should/can join them! Thanks for sharing, Jeff. Glad someone responded.

Not that I'm trying to turn anyone away from Smashwords, but I've been an affiliate since April 2011. I have my referral link published in many places including an entire page on my own website. It's on FaceBook, my email signature, DeviantArt comment signature. With all that exposure, only one(1) book has sold. There are plenty of hits, but no sales. Personally, I'm beginning to wonder if it is worth the work I do to keep the information up-to-date. I wish I could tell how well books are selling in general. I know it's difficult to push unknown authors, but with over 50,000 titles and 5 months, they should be doing more business. I wonder if selling books is worth it for Smashwords.

I am in the affiliate scheme, but I find the amazon one is better. In terms of book sales Smashwords can be erratic - I've some books that are doing exceptionally well and others that have barely moved even when free.

Affiliate schemes are schemes where you get paid a small percentage every time someone buys the book from your website or through the affiliate link. With Amazon, the tracking lasts longer and if the user who clicked on your link buys something other than the book, you get credit for that sale. Details of the Amazon.com one are here.

I've been in Smashword's affiliate program since I started publishing and made a few sales through it. Smashwords lets you offer affiliates more than the 11% commission, but I don't think the referral system is big enough to be really concerned about offering a higher percentage on your side. I haven't heard of anyone making a living as a Smashwords affiliate as some do being an Amazon affiliate.
