For those of us about to buy or receive a Kindle (he typed hopefully), is there a way to start buying Kindle Books even before I receive my Kindle?
There doesn't seem to be, but am curious if anyone knows a way.
I'd like to take advantage of buying some of the sales, and downloading free books from the Kindle Store, even before my Kindle arrives. Then I'll have a library ready to go when my Kindle arrives (he again typed hopefully).

Once a Kindle is purchased and registered to an Amazon account, you can start buying books, downloading sample chapters, and "buying" the free books that Amazon offers. So, if your wife has indeed bought you a Kindle for Christmas, then it may be registered to her--or your--account (if you have a joint account). On the other hand, if she designated it as a gift when she bought it, then it will not be registered to any account. The gift recipient (you) would need to register it upon opening it. In that scenario, you wouldn't be able to buy any books in advance. Leslie

Uh-oh. It's probably not a good sign for your budget that you haven't even ordered your Kindle yet, and you are already looking to buy books!

Frankly, I think if there is a Kindle hidden in your house, you should say, "Listen, I'm am the admin of the most happenin' Kindle site on the Internet. I have to have a Kindle, as a research tool! How else can I answer all these questions?" Works for me! L

Hmm. It's a good idea. My win rate in those type of spousal negotiations is not very good, though.

One of my arguements was the fact that I will use less gas to travel to the bookstore (my parents fear my driving), because I have a kindle. Also books are a bit cheaper through the kindle and in time it pays for itself.
PS: I still go to the bookstore between classes in order to pass time.

Hm, stop thinking like the 7 year old who wanted to have a birthday party where all he wanted was to have his friends bring books and read for the afternoon and start thinking like the CEO of the most happening Kindle place on the internet! And then, when you have the Kindle in your hands, you go can back to being that 7 year old! LOL (I realize this baby is a little younger than 7...LOL)

I get to order my Kindle later today.... I have hit the free books site and downloaded tons of books... I have a little file on my computer that says Kindle and have even renamed files at the suggestions of posters....its all ready to go..... Later today I can haunt Amazon for a few to arrive on the Kindle.... A Brad Thor series I am dying to read...but only read the first one in dead tree format and have been saving the rest for Kindle.... It has helped while I saved for the Kindle to find free stuff on the web and organize and get ready.... I am anxious for work to be over and errands to be done....

DebT, ordering is only the first step to the waiting. Looks like there is still a 2-3 week wait for shipping. I thought 5 days was bad.

Try wait 4-6 weeks like some of us who order it when it first came out, I think a lot of us were going mad waiting for the shipping notices. I must have check the status of my kindle at least 10 or more time a day.D

I was the same, but used to check on my kindle's status during class. (I know that bad, but its worse than my cousin's myspace addiction.)
