Greetings -- Will Kindle read the TXT format directly, or must I convert it over to the Kindle format?  I plan to copy it to the SD card directly from my computer having obtained it from Gutenberg.

Thank you,

ZU

You need to convert it. The only files that Kindle will read natively are .azw, .azw1, .prc and .mobi. Everything else must be converted in some way.

GREETINGS --

Thank you. How would you recommend I do that.  I know that I can email it to my Kindle email address, but are there other ways?

Regards,

For HTML, PDF, and TXT files use Mobipocket creator

   a. Import it from home page of Mobipocket creator
   b. Add cover photo as required or wanted (or not)
   c. Adjust Metadata. Be sure to hit the update button at the bottom of screen.
Title and Author on Kindle home page list will be as it shows here.
   d. "Build" it. Where .PRC goes is set in the options.  Defaults to making a .PRC

(Thank you to Michael K. for this information)

Actually, the Kindle can read .txt files directly.  The My Clippings file is plain text, and my books work fine straight from gutenburg.org, although they don't have nice formatting, of course.
