I was just wondering if the Kindle 3 Wifi was exactly $139, or $139 + tax?

No state sales tax, yet. A lot of states want it from online stores but they haven't been able to get it.

Actually, Amazon has to charge sales tax in a very few states. From Amazon's site:
"Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax."

Yeah, online stores have to charge sales tax if they have a physical presence in the state. So for Amazon it's the states where they have their warehouse/shipping centers.
Where as stores like Wal-mart.com have to charge tax everywhere since they have locations in every state and so on.

I am in Mexico so I had to pay $138 plus tax plus some duty. FWIW, my mother had to pay income tax for three years after she died so don't think you can avoid the vultures.

What? How...is that even possible...that makes me sad.

What? How...is that even possible . . . The estate pays taxes on income earned while it is open. Apparently the estate took a long time to be settled. Back to your regularly scheduled programming . . .

New York residents pay sales tax to Amazon. There are a few other states where residents have to pay sales tax on their kindles. We've had this discussion on Kindleboards many times.

What if I purchase it on Amazon.ca because I'm from Canada? Is it plus tax or is $139 still the definite price?

Kyah, it's definitely 'plus tax' if applicable or required.
I think you can put the Kindle in your cart and go through to see what the full price with all shipping/tax/import duties included. . . . .if that number is too high, you don't have to click "buy".
