Is it necessary? I just wonder if it would have any adverse effect when reading under sunlight.

I have never used one.....seems that it would degrade the wonderful technology that the Kindle uses for its display.

I put one on my second K3.  The first K3 had a small mark on the screen from ??  It was actually like a little ding or something. I'm not sure how it happened, but it bugged me when reading because that little whatever was about three inches down from the top and two inches in from the left side. It kind of distorted the text a little. It was the actual screen because I could feel it with my fingernail.  Anyhow, with my second K3, I put on a Grantwood Technology screen protector - two for $4.99.  Do you absolutely need it? Probably not. But this is a nice protector and I don't even know it is on.

Need to be careful with the screen protectors... some have a really nasty habit of leaving air bubbles underneath when you apply it.
I've found that using a plastic card to smoothen it out helps, and some screen protectors include a plastic stick that can do essentially
the same thing.

Here's one that I've found works splendidly: http://onlinegiftsdeals.com/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=53

I'm a nervous nellie.  I use one.  I'm afraid that my keys or something inside my purse might wedge inside the cover and scratch my screen.  I read outside with no problems.

I put on a Boxwave NON-glare one.  It makes me feel better when I hand my k3 to someone who immediately starts poking the "touch" screen on the k3.
