Hi all, great thread. Thanks Carl for starting it and keeping it alive.

I'm a fellow writer and reader of books for kids. I spent most of my childhood with my face buried in one book or another, and continued the pattern into adulthood. Then, when my son was born, I got to repeat the cycle all over again. Lots of fun.

I started writing for kids without much forethought: my third grader needed some encouragement to finish writing a rather lengthy book review, so I offered to write a story for him while he wrote a book review for school. He finished his work in about an hour; I couldn't stop for months. I've continued the pattern, targeting my son's age group with my writing (although he ages faster than I write, so I always end up a few years behind the curve). Currently aiming for the 8-11 age range.

I have a MG series called the Troubled Tweens, light fantasy. It sells very well on the Nook, but abysmally on the Kindle. No idea why.

I love good children and young adult fiction, and my Michael Belmont series is aimed at young adults and families.  I think most of the greatest fiction has been written for children.  When I see someone snub a book because it's written "for kids", it makes me think that person is a real pinhead and doesn't know what they are missing out on.

I guess I write children's books. Or maybe middle grade. But the vast majority of my fans are adults.

I often say my books are 'YA horror/comedy,' but I don't know if THAT'S even right.  The protagonist is 10 years old, soooo...I'm kind of stretching it.

I tell people that I write the kinds of children's books I would have liked to have read as a kid...but that my overly-conservative parents wouldn't have liked.  That's about right.

Hi all! It's been a while since I stopped in, but I just received the lineart for the cover image of my upcoming children's book "Wizards of the Body Shop" from my illustrator. I have to admit I'm starting to get excited about it and I can hardly wait to see the finished drawings.

I've written some children's books. They aren't published yet, but they have been tested on a 4-year old, although she may be just a little biased. I've been reading all of Baum's Oz books to my daughter, she can't get enough of them. I've been thinking of writing an Oz book and putting my daughter into the story.

I'm a children's fantasy fiction writer - proud owner of one book, The Firestone Crystal!!  Hopefully, more will follow, but right now I'm still basking in the after-glow of publishing my first story.

I enjoyed writing it, and I love children's fiction even now.  I still get all fired up with enthusiasm when I read young adult and children's fiction - brings back a lot of childhood memories and inspires me to write even more.

I went to the library yesterday and realized I've read all the children's fiction Roald Dahl ever wrote. I guess I have to start reading his adult fiction

I'd say Kelm's Revenge and Teo's Big Deal are fantasy for kids of all ages.

OTOH, while there's nothing obscene or violent in it, I'd say Rat's Chance is humor for high school and up (maybe some junior high) due to inuendo.

I love this idea! I read the Oz books only recently and was surprised to find them so readable and funny still (don't know why that was a surprise, but sometimes things you love as a kid just don't quite stand up when you are fully grown!)

I write children's books too. One of my books for older kids is available on Kindle now, and is a ghost story/native american mystery entitled Secrets of the Spirits. I'm working on a few other things at the moment, and also find that one of my favorite things about writing kids books is reading tonnes of other fun books for 'research'!

Howdy.  Not sure why I might have missed this thread.  After starting out writing romances, I've finally gotten on the stick with some YA/MG books that have been in my head for the past 12 years or so.  The characters are teens, but there are no 'heavy' issues as there are in many YA books (drugs, abuse, alcohol, etc.); just good, ol'-fashioned adventure.  Anyway, I've published the first one (below in sig), and the 2nd one is in the wings, with the 3rd still under construction.

I have won 2 National prizes for my children's fiction manuscripts (unpublished as yet but coming soon....).  As for reading I only read children's fiction, there's no story telling comparable to children's stories because you require infinite imagination for that.
