FINISHED -- Playing for Keeps:

Some books need to be read with your brain turned off.  This is one.  Once you get over the implausibility, it was fun, kind of like a silly summer movie.  3.5 stars.  If you attempted this read this book thinking logically and rating for a fancy prose style, it would rank less.

King Al, I'm reading The Phantom Tollbooth on my Kindle right now.  It's such a fun book. I don't know how I've missed it for so long. I think it's about 35% in.

I'm also listening to The Rainmaker from Audible.. Also good.. Needs a bit of editing though. He's too wordy for me. I'm maybe 30% or so in on this one too.

I don't think I'm going to be able to get to the George R.R. Martin book this month though.

MissStar - I know you said I didn't have to post, but you were so nice to give me a book when I was being all sad about not playing this month - I had to write and say thanks!  I'm between trips for a few days and finished The Crystal Singer in just a few days.  I'm not a sci/fi or fantasy reader - and don't know how you would classify this book - but found it a lot of fun!

I wasn't quite sure how to classify it either...but I'm glad you liked it!!  I hope your trips are going well.  Cheesy

Thanks again, Annalog!  Quite a crowd pleaser.  Wink

Ugh--I got busy w/ 2 other books and forgot all about my assigned one!  I'll get back to it. It's not really my cup o' tea but I'm determined to read it anyway, LOL.

RavenClawPrefect has never said a THING about the book I assigned her. Sad  Hope she doesn't hate it!

I finished both The Phantom Tollbooth and The Rainmaker today.

I really enjoyed The Phantom Tollbooth. What a fun book. I'm so glad I finally read it.

As to The Rainmaker, I was expecting more. I guess I've read too many Grisham books where it was all a big conspiracy. I kept waiting for all the threads to tie together in this big huge plot and it didn't.

Thank you, KingAl for your recommendations.

The Phantom Tollbooth is one of my favorite childhood books.  I need to read it again.

I love The Phantom Tollbooth. I would have recommended it by now if I realized it had a kindle version.

Ok Al ,

I
Killing Floor by Lee Child .This is the first in a seriously long saga but is good to go as a book on its own

When Jack Reacher suddenly decides to ask a Greyhound bus driver to let him off near the town of Margrave, Georgia, he thinks it's because his brother once mentioned that the famed blues guitarist Blind Blake died there. But it doesn't take long for the footloose ex-military policeman to discover that there are plenty of strange--and very dangerous--things going on behind Margrave's manicured lawns and clean streets that demand his attention. This first thriller by a former television writer features some of the best-written scenes of action in recent memory, a crash course in currency and counterfeiting, and a hero who is just begging to be called on for an encore.

Interesting main character... this book reminds me of the typical Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick (TONS of action, though our hero does  more thinking than Arnold...). I wouldn't exactly call it a must-buy, but it is definitely worth reading.

Ok so sorry for not getting to ths sooner.  The book I was able to read due to time restrictions this month was Loose Ends.  The book once I got into it was a fairly quick read and one I wish I would have had more time to read at once.  The characters were funny and well defined.  Deffinitly ill be checking out the rest in the series.

The other one I hope to get to on vacation.
