The Moon in Deep Winter

Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Has anybody else noticed that lately (the last year or so or even the last couple of months), there have been much more "trials and tribulations" both on the global level and in our personal lives?

In the last couple of months I have experienced double then triple, etc. "whammy".  My wife and I had three car accidents in the period of two months, one of them (my wife's) was on the same day that I was laid off.  About a month ago, they found some 8 mm "clot" or something in my brother's (a young guy in his 20s) brain.  They said he might have stroke any minute (that's after my father died of stroke three years ago).  My mom had a heart scare about a month ago (not entirely clear what it was, did not have $$ or insurance to get detailed tests).  My cousin who lives 30 minutes from me lost a job a month ago.  I don't have job -> insurance for my family and we have two young kids (1 year old and 4 year old).  I am not sure if I'll be able to keep my house.

I've never had this bad in my life.  I do not complain.  I just want to comprehend what is going on.  Are we close to the end of times?  I try to keep our spirits up and pray more, "Come, Lord Jesus."

osnova I personally think you are probably being "tested" and from what it appears, you are doing what is right.  I don't think anything is happening globally other than to individuals, we are more aware of what is going on because the world is getting smaller and smaller.

I read the update on Amy and what a miracle.  That is amazing, and I'm so glad to hear.

Osnova, I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.  I was in your position years and years ago
when I was married and my three were very little.  Somehow we always came through.

My update: I had my surgery on Thursday and all went well.  I should get my results tomorrow.
Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts.

Thank you so much for everyone who has been praying for Amy.  It is truly a miracle how fast she is recovering.

Update:
Amy is talking more and more.  She seems most alert in the evenings.  I dunno why, but I'm the person she talks to the most (for now).  I'm grateful for this, of course, but I feel bad for her other loved ones who haven't been as successful.  They keep trying, though.

I'm troubled by the fact that she can't move her left side at all.  Also, she can't swallow yet.  They've taken her off the ventilator, so she's breathing on her own.  She put on lip balm by herself yesterday and attempted to color a picture (but after about 30 seconds, she got tired).  The next time I see her, I'm going to ask her if she can try to write her name (she told me she can still read).

Although she is doing much, much better, it kills me to see her like this.  She's as helpless as a baby.  It breaks my heart, but I have faith that she will one day return to her former self.  Thanks again for all your kind thoughts and wishes.

Her kitties miss her, but they are happy living with my fiance and I for now, and they've quickly bonded to our kitten.  I love them!

Here is a poem I wrote for Amy.  I read it aloud to her yesterday and she seemed pleased.  Hope y'all like it, too!

"Starlit"

Their words of inspiration never comfort me.
No soul exists to match my inner design.
Colors blend into a blur;
I'm obscured, and I'm screaming without sound
When the voices go to town, when they crowd,
When they come around.

Though I reach for the light,
It blackens every time;
Silver embers left behind
As I stretch my arms up high.

See all the hidden parts of me?
I was born to leave a legacy--
Not live this fallen prophecy,
And entertain catastrophes.

They say I have to reach,
And reach, and reach—
Until I push myself up to the stars;
Until I pull them down to me.
But if my ambition is my greed,
It may well lead to my defeat.

Yet miracles do arise—
It’s not too late to turn the tide,
And thrive with pride.

So I’ll stand up and fight;
Greet the darkness of my plight.
Show all of the doubters
A different side of light.
I’ll watch the sunset tonight
Undisguised;
Through my dreaming, starlit eyes.

Thank you for your time!

Thank you for the update on Amy.  I will continue to think of her and her family and you and your family as well, furbabies included.

My update: Ductal Carcinoma in Situ.  Not the best news, but not horrible news either.  Totally treatable with few side effects.  The area the surgeon biopsied around the turmor tested clean, no cancer.  This is exactly what my aunt was diagnosed with about 45 days ago.  I will be seeing an oncologist and undergoing radiation therapy.
Thank you for all of your prayers.

All, I've read the posts.  Do not get discouraged.  Maranatha!

The trust in the Lord is its own reward (remember Jesus's parable about the beggar Lazarus and the rich man) but I believe and pray that He will provide relief to His children in the time of need.  Come, Lord Jesus.

I've had a major sewer problem in the house.  The immediate issue has been resolved by the plumbers but I will need to have the sewer line from the house to the county main replaced soon.

On the other hand, I have a job interview scheduled for Thursday.  It appears a good fit: they have work and need someone with my skills and experience, while I have the skills and experience and need work. Smiley  I pray that this works out.

Come, Lord Jesus.

osnova, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for your job interview.
And I'm so sorry to hear about your sewer problems.  Such a nuisance, and expense at a time when it's inconvenient.

Deb, you will remain in my prayers. I wish (as I'm sure you do) it was just a harmless cyst. But you know it could have been a lot worse. I'll be praying for you that the radiation goes as well as possible & you get a clean bill of health in short order.

Osnova, I'll be praying that this interview goes well & you soon have a job. We just had our sewer line replaced from the house to where we tap in to the township's sewer. If you want to see some "lovely" pictures, I have posted them on Webshots for our family & friends to keep up with this project. It's finished now & all we have to do is relandscape in the spring.

Deb, hang in there!  My fiance's mom survived lymph node cancer when they doctors thought she might not have a chance.  I'm convinced it's because we all kept telling her that we believed she'd make it (she eventually believed it, too--that's ultimately what saved her).  I will keep praying for your swift recovery!  Stay strong. <3

I haven't posted in a while, but I want everyone to know that they are in my prayers. I'm having a lot of problems with my neck from a fall I had in June and I have been traveling a lot for work. I'm home for a while and will start physical therapy tomorrow. I'm hoping that will relieve me of some of my pain. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

Can you add me to the list? DH and I had a talk earlier this week about problems we are having (real and perceived). He saw a therapist yesterday who advised him to "get away for a while" so last night he tells me that he's getting a hotel room this weekend. With the winter storm, I thought he'd change his mind and come home, but he's not yet and won't be with the amt already on the ground.

I was dignosied with clinical depression many many years ago (right before I met him) and have been untreated for almost as long. After talking with friends today, I realise that most of my problems can be traced back to it. So, I called my dr and am trying to get an appt to see her before March. Sad I am working on it, I just hope he understands and that we can work things out. I'm sitting here in the house, the little one even wnated to go to bed before 7, so I think he might be picking up on something. Sad Trying not to cry...

mom133d, I'm so so very sorry.  I will definitely keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Please know that we are here to listen whenever you need.

Thank you, everyone, for your words of encouragement.  I am very happy that the diagnosis is what it is.
It could be much worse.  My family really needs your prayers more than I do right now.  Some of them are not
responding as positively as am.

Kathy, hope you get better soon.

Osnova, any thoughts on how the job interview went?

deb - specifically adding your family to the list also.  We'll be your cheerleaders when you need us.
Kathy - good luck with your physical therapy - praying for good results.
As always praying in general for all my KindleBoards friends.
