The Moon in Deep Winter
by Lee Polevoi

$0.99
Kindle Edition published 2008-01-10
Bestseller ranking: 460964

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Linda, my thoughts and prayers will be with Kate and her family. Nothing is harder than having your child so sick.

osnova, check in when you can so we know how you are doing.

A quick update from my cell phone. Spent this weekend with the family and working and now back on the road.

May God rich of mercy and tender love show all of us who seek him that he is near. One day we'll see him face to face.

Lynn you are in my prayers as are all the people of Haiti.

I would like to request prayers for my friend's 5 year old daughter Kate. She has a rare, aggressive brain tumor. Has completed 5 rounds of intense chemo with residual tumor left. The choices are tough. There is great risk with another surgery and great risk without. Please pray for Holly and Aaron and their daughter Kate.  The Mcrae family.

Thank you!
Linda, My DD(10) and I have been following Kate for a few months now... I get journal updates on my phone... it is so sad and Holly and Aaron are very strong for her. I know they have a tough decision to make this week and we have been praying for them to have even more strength. She is such a beautiful little girl and they got thrown into this whole thing so fast... God Bless this family.

Also praying for all of our KB friends who need strength to get through the rough times you are going through. God Bless.

Oncologist called today.  MRI was fine.  No new areas of cancer.  Woo hoo.
I go Thursday for my planning session.  Which amounts to signing releases,
CT scan to set up the spots, or something, the tattoos applied, and then I
will be able to start the actual treatments a few days after that.

Dona, that's so funny.  I was so excited when I found out I would be getting a "tattoo".  It's actually just a little dot, but I asked for a butterfly so I could freak my kids out.  The doctor laughed.

OK, I have decided to have hip replacement surgery.  Now it is up to the insurance company we have if they will pay for it or not.  The forms have been filled in and taken to the company, but it takes 10-12 working days for a decision.  The doctor I use only operates on Saturdays, so that would put it about the 6th of Feb - NO WAY - Super Bowl Sunday the next day, plus my birthday  Shocked  I don't think so.  IF we get approval for the 30th, I'll go for it then.  If necessary we will pay for it ourselves down the line, but the doctor said there should be no problem with insurance, that's what we pay them for  Huh  I am looking forward to being able to be active again with no pain!  It will be a 3 month, more or less, to full recovery, but that's better than pain!

deb I don't know why your doctor won't be a little creative!  Cool

Dona, wow, what a big decision.  My absolute best friend ever has had two hip replacements on each side.  Her's is a defect from birth.  She does wonderful through her recovery periods.   You are a very active woman already, with no overweight issue.  You should do great.  But I'm getting tears in my eyes thinking about you not being around for a week or so while you're in the hospital.

Remember the Friends episode where Rachel and Phoebe went to get tattoos and Rachel got hers, but Phoebe chickened out after the first little prick?  When Phoebe showed her little dot she said she got a tattoo of the whole world as her mother saw it from heaven.  That's what I'm going to have, the whole world as seen from heaven.

Love it - the world from heaven!  Good thought  Smiley

I am a "little" overweight, I keep fighting it but it's not too terribly bad  Huh  I have a horrible metabolism which means it's been difficult to maintain with no exercise, but I'm healthy otherwise, so that is in my favor.  Everyone says hip is better than knee so that is in my favor also.  Doctor said I will be up the next day if not sooner, and home in 2 days so I am looking forward to that as well.  Will keep everyone posted.

Deb - exciting news and will keep praying for you.
Dona - will pray for full recovery and an easy time with the insurance.
An extremely good friend of mine had both hips done at the same time. Too many jumps out of planes in 'nam.

God loves you guys.

Deb- glad the MRI was good news and that things are moving along-for me waiting is sometimes the worst.

I saw the surgeon today and am having surgery next Thursday, but he is very confident that the lump is benign. So I am very thankful.

Praying for all

Meredith, I'm sorry I made you tear up.
I do have another prayer request this morning.
I was getting ready to leave for my oncologist/radiologist appointment and then my planning session for my treatments.
The Cancer Center called and said my insurance company has my treatment "under review".  Are you kidding me?  This is not an experimental treatment.  Gesh.  Anyway, I called the insurance company and they blamed it on the Cancer Center saying they did not call the request in soon enough.  Errr....frustrating.

Keeping everyone else in my thoughts today.

Thank you, Dona.  I guess in the scope of the whole situation this is not even close the worst thing that could happen.
Actually, I'm more aggrevated that I got dressed up, hair, makeup, the whole nine yards, for nothing.  All dressed up and no place to go.  LOL.

Sailorman I did miss you!  Sometimes it difficult to know if you should try to contact someone because they might not be comfortable with KB  and don't particularly want to have a whole lot to do with us.

I am delighted to know you are doing better.
