The Moon in Deep Winter

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Growing up in a Christian home... I had always been told that "God never gives you more than you can handle".  I went through some really rough years (divorce, single parent of 3 etc) and one day I told my best friend, "I know God never gives you more than you can handle... but He has to have me mixed up with someone else because I can't take any more!!"  Years later, when I was giving a talk at a Christian women's week-end, I told that story.  Then I told the women that I really don't believe that that is how the saying should go.  That puts all of the burden of handling things on the person.  What I believe the saying needs to be is:  God never give you more than you AND HE can handle together.  We can't do it in our own strength.  Life just gets too overwhelming and we get worn down.  But, that's when He's there to give us His strength and help.... and He is sufficient!!
Heather, it's hard when you can't be there physically for your friend... but you know that He is there with her and your prayers for her will not go unanswered.  Call her when you can.  My best friend doesn't live near me any more either.... but I know that when I hear her voice on the phone, it helps me so much!  If she likes cards, send her cards and notes of encouragment... my BF did that for me also.
     We'll be praying also......

I am praying for Rosetta, Heather.

I've always heard if God brings you to it He will bring you through it and over the years I have found this to be very ture. Life is difficult but God is good!

Quick update: My sister's mammogram is normal.  I was pretty sure that was the case.
The tech explained that my sister's breast ended up being folded.  I'm trying to word this delicately.
Anyway, the second mammogram is fine.
Thank you all.

Deb, glad to hear the good news.

Will keep Heather and Rosetta in my prayers.

I would also like to ask for prayers for safe travel and successful work for a mission trip that I will be part of - we leave for Mexico in a couple days, will be down there for a week and a half building houses.

Elmore,
We will certainly keep your travel, and your good work, in our prayers.
Where in Mexico will you be building?

Great news Deb!

Elmore you and the group will be in my prayers. One of the most rewarding things I've ever done was go on a 7 day medical mission to Venezuela. It was life changing! May God bless you.

We head down to Mercedes, Texas (southernmost tip) and cross over to Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, a small tourist town. The colonias we work in are a few miles south of Nuevo Progreso. Our trip is primarily to build houses, although we sometimes are able to help with food and clothing distributions. I appreciate the prayers!

Thank you for your prayers for Zetta's dad. He has surgery tomorrow. After the surgery we'll know how serious his condition is. I'll keep you posted.

Quick update: Seen oncologist today.  MRI results were previously reported everything fine.  Overall they are fine, except that I need to go back in 6 months for another MRI because of some small "spots" pretty much like the ones they just took out in December.  Not the everything is perfect, you're 100% clear I had thought it was, but also not the worst news.

They took a whole bunch of blood today.  I'm not sure I've ever given that much.  There are a few problems with some numbers.  Some of them have been a previous concern, others are new.  So whatever number isn't great means I need to be careful being in public.

Heater, hoping your friend's dad is doing well today.

Deb, Continuing to keep you in my prayers.

Update on Larry (Zetta's dad) he had his surgery yesterday and is doing well. The Dr's won't speculate and the pathology reports will take 5-10 days.
