The Moon in Deep Winter

Product Description
This literary thriller revolves around Parker Sloane. When he returns from a dismal foray into third-world cash-smuggling to his childhood home in the woods of New England, it seems he’s seeing his country and his blended stepfamily for the first time—and finding both just as twitchy, desperate, paranoid and unpredictable as the underworld types he thought he’d escaped.

Before he can even unpack, Parker goes head-to-head with his relatives—his tyrannical stepfather, seething younger brother, newly evangelical mother, and his alluring younger half-sister Rita—and with the demons they never exorcised.

Delicately but disastrously, Parker attempts to keep his family from imploding, unaware that they have their own plans for escape. The Moon in Deep Winter combines the dark comedy of the Coen brothers with the doomed lyricism of Denis Johnson, creating an airtight world of homicidal family dysfunction.

Just an update. My sister has the epidural out and is now taking short walks. All of the prayers are working. They still don't know when she will be able to go home, but her progress is better than expected.

I had my first nerve block in my neck yesterday. I have my fingers crossed that it works. I will have to have a 2nd one in 2 weeks and then if that works they will block it permanently. So far I can tell it did help, but with the swelling and soreness from the procedure I can't tell how much. As you can see I'm not sleeping. I can't get comfortable, but I am sure that will improve today.

Thanks for all of the kind thoughts and prayers.

Request:

My cousin in his 60's (nicest guy; so into his wife, children and grandchildren) was eating a slice of pizza two weeks ago; and he couldn't swallow it comfortably...this went on for a couple days.

Went to doctor:  Has cancer of the esophagus...
Went for scans:  Cancer is everywhere, bones...etc. Now diagnosed as terminal

My prayer request:
Minimal suffering; for his and his family's sakes
Strength for his family to cope and to be able to tend to his needs

THANK YOU.

My aunt Joann was diagnosed with throat cancer Monday.  She went to the oncologist/radiologist today.
She told my sister that she wasn't worried because "if Debbie made it through it, then so can I".
What I went through is NOTHING like what she is going through.  My cancer was NEVER life threatening.
She has great faith, one of the strongest I know, but throat cancer is so much different than what
I went through.  I'm very worried about her.  I'm also very worried about my sister.  She's VERY attached
to this particular aunt.  As some of you know, my sister is handicapped and has a few special attachments
to certain people.  Aunt Joann is one of them.  So please pray for Joann and my sister Kim.
thank you,
deb

Joann and Kim are in my prayers.

drenee:
You still had to endure a lot; just the stress and the emotional toll is enough.  I'm just so grateful and glad that you are doing well; you are an asset to these boards.

My cousin went today for his 1st treatment:  he has tumor in his:  esophagus, lower back, hip, and the cancer is in his liver and his bones.  He felt fine 3 weeks ago....imagine!!

Dona - I continue to pray for your complete recovery and return to full activity levels.

Kathy - so glad to hear about your sister Beverly's progress. Will continue to keep her in prayer.
And for your own return to comfort and a full night's sleep.

SJC - I am so sorry to hear about your cousin.  At times like this, the sooner he goes home to his Lord the better....for all.
I will keep you in prayer for strength and remember his entire family for comforting.  And God be with him.

Deb - will pray for your aunt Joanne that she have a complete remission and that her path to it be made as easy as possible.
And special requests for your sister, Kim.  That she may be comforted in this time of stress for her.
And I will always include you to keep your courage up.  You are such an encouragement to all who know you.

Anne - how is your brother-in-law? We keep you and your family in our prayers for continued healing and comfort.

And my prayers include all the rest of you too.  We all need to be remembered to the Lord.  I covet your prayers even when not in need.  Thank you for being so sharing.

First I agree with you Geoff, "we all need to be remembered to the Lord."

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/mcraekate

What do they say, out of the mouths of babes... read Holly's journal entry for Friday 04/09/10. I sobbed as I read it and got little sleep Friday night but then Saturday I had to smile. I bet "Jeez" got a good chuckle. We adults have so much baggage but the innocence of a child is amazing. Please keep Kate, Holly, Aaron, Liv and Will in your prayers. She is precious beyond words!

Thank you, everyone, for the prayers for my aunt and my sister, and for the words of encouragement.
Well meaning friends and family have wondered if I have been in denial concerning the cancer.  I haven't
been.  I am fully aware how lucky I am.  But I also know that attitude can kill a person just as fast as a
disease.

SJC, your cousin is in my thoughts and prayers.

Holly's entry does indeed make you stop and think about how short life can be, and how resilient a child can be.

I want to thank everyone who has been praying for my friend's grandson Justin and share some good news. After three rounds of chemo, he was reevaluated.  His tumor has shrunk significantly and more importantlt it has shrunk AWAY from his liver.  The doctors are very hopeful that one more round of chemo will make the tumor small enough so that it can be removed safely.  If that happens there is a very high probabability of a cure. He has also been tolerating his treatments very well. Justin's parents say that they have received the strength to deal with all of this from the prayers they have received from so many different people.

I spoke with my sister yesterday and our Aunt Joann's throat cancer is the slow
growing type.  So they are not rushing her through treatment.  They have time
to make some decisions.  Thank you for your prayers.  My sister has calmed down
now that we know it's not a dire situation.

I understand perfectly. It has been a longer recovery for you than expected. I'm going through the same thing, but I know that I'm getting better even if it isn't at the pace I want. I will continue to pray for everyone and I'm so happy knowing that I have others praying for me.

Please pray for my friend Lisa as she is struggling to make a very hard decision about her 16-year-old Chow Chow named Noel.  Sixteen years is pretty old for a Chow and she's had a good life.
I just went through this so recently with Tuxedo that I feel I can't help her much because I still tear up so easily...

Andra:  I pray for your friend.  It is a very tough thing; been there done that.

All:  Thanks for your prayers for my cousin Bob; he's had his first treatment and has lost 21 pounds.  I went to visit him Saturday and his attitude is great; but I know what lies ahead and I pray even harder.

Andra I have been there too with my cat "Tory" in the 1990's. I still tear up thinking of it and miss her. Pets are so wonderful and such an important part of our life's. She will be in my prayers.

SJC continuing to pray for Bob.
