Registering Kindle app on Mac to view samples

I downloaded the Kindle app for Mac, and I'd like to be able to read samples on it as I browse the Kindle store (and then buy some books, of course) but Amazon keeps telling me I don't have an app or Kindle registered with my Amazon account. Yet every time I click "register" I just get another opportunity to download the same app. I've tried reinstalling the app several times, and I see no opportunity to register it with my Amazon account. So I can only read the free books that came with the app. Argh!

Menu bar at the top, Preferences, General, Register

That's where you go to register the app.
